Traveling 10-date hip-hop festival will also feature sets from Pharcyde, Mos Def, De La Soul, Method Man & Redman, Raekwon & Ghostface, and more.

While ringtone rap, dance routines, and "Lollipop" continue to dominate the hip-hop charts, festival organizer Guerilla Union has built its massive Rock the Bells event into a juggernaut by focusing on classic hip-hop and emerging underground acts.

The lineup. The lineup.

The latest installment will feature a mix of both: Seminal '90s acts A Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde are headlining the bill, along with fellow vets Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, and every MC's favorite MC, Rakim.

There will be plenty of emerging acts as well, including Santogold, Spank Rock, Kid Sister, Jay Electronica, Wale, Flosstradamus, Kidz in the Hall, and the Cool Kids. Not every act will be on the bill in every city.

The traveling hip-hop festival will hit 10 North American amphitheaters, starting July 19 in Chicago and concluding August 30 in Vancouver. Stops include Toronto, Boston, New York City, Miami, Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

"They asked me, and I immediately decided to do it," A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip told Billboard. "With the amazing lineup, Rock the Bells is definitely this summer's must-see show. Plus, Rock the Bells has given me the opportunity to reunite with my legendary cohorts--Ali and Phife--and premiere my latest material from The Renaissance."

The inclusion of Tribe indicates that Phife has returned to health. The rapper, who was diagnosed with diabetes in 1990, had been in need of a kidney transplant in late 2007.

A Tribe Called Quest A Tribe Called Quest

Without question the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s, A Tribe Called Quest jump-started and perfected the hip-hop alternative to hardcore and gangsta rap. In essence, they abandoned the macho posturing rap music had been constructed upon, and focused instead on abstract philosophy and message tracks. The "sucka MC" theme...

Nas Nas

Heralded instantly as one of New York's leading rap voices, Nas expressed an outspoken, self-empowered swagger that rallied the streets of his city and elsewhere. Whether proclaiming himself "Nasty Nas" or "Nas Escobar" or "Nastradamus" or "God's Son," the self-appointed King of New York battled numerous adversaries for his position atop the...

The Pharcyde The Pharcyde

An influential alternative rap quartet from South Central Los Angeles, the Pharcyde was formed by MCs/producers Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart, Imani Wilcox, and Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson. Hardson, Wilcox, and Robinson were all dancers and choreographers who met on the L.A. underground club circuit in the late '80s, worked...

Mos Def Mos Def

Initially regarded as one of hip-hop's most promising newcomers in the late '90s, Mos Def expanded his reach in the years to come, establishing himself as a serious actor and also making a bid to reshape the rap-rock genre. His artistic career began in the late '80s as a television actor, a profession he began directly out of high school. By the...

De La Soul De La Soul

At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew...

Raekwon

Raekwon may not have achieved the solo stardom of his fellow Wu-Tang Clan mates Method Man or Ol' Dirty Bastard, but along with Genius/GZA and frequent partner Ghostface Killah, he's done some of the most inventive, critically acclaimed work outside the confines of the group. Born Corey Woods and also nicknamed the Chef (because he's "cookin' up...

Ghostface Killah Ghostface Killah

As one of the original members of the seminal '90s rap crew the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah (aka Tony Starks) made an impact before he released his debut album, Ironman, late in 1996. Like all members of the Wu-Tang Clan, the rapper used the group as a launching pad for a solo career, which was assisted greatly by other members of the Clan,...

Rakim Rakim

Although he never became a household name, Rakim is near-universally acknowledged as one of the greatest MCs -- perhaps the greatest -- of all time within the hip-hop community. It isn't necessarily the substance of what he says that's helped him win numerous polls among rap fans in the know; the majority of his lyrics concern his own...

A Tribe Called Quest
Continuing with the subdued, mature stylistic flow of Beats, Rhymes and Life, The Love Movement, the fifth album from A Tribe Called Quest, is the group's subtlest album yet -- which may just be a polite way for saying it's a little monotonous. Throughout the record, Tribe mines the same jazz-flavored, R&B-fueled beats that were the hallmark of...

Method Man & Redman
Hip-hop fans have known for years that Method Man and Redman are two of the top MCs in the field, and their tour together not only proved the fact, but also showed they rap incredibly well together. Their deliveries are similar and the flow never falters, but the hint of gravel in Meth's voice makes them easily distinguishable. Now, with...
