We've encountered a few cases of the audio suddenly skipping on normally well-behaved iTunes programs. Here's how to fix it, should it happen to you.

Who It's For: Anyone with the very specific and somewhat rare problem of iTunes skipping.

Requirements: An installation of iTunes that skips during playback

Summary: Sometimes when you install a new audio program, or for no good reason at all, iTunes can start skipping during playback. If this has happened to you, don't despair; this tutorial shows you how to fix that (and it doesn't even involve reinstalling or restarting).

Open the Control Panel Open the Control Panel

1. Open Control Panel

Close iTunes, if it's open. Go to Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel and select it.

Open QuickTime Settings Open QuickTime Settings

2. Open QuickTime Settings

Double-click on the QuickTime icon.

Choose Sound Out Choose Sound Out

3. Choose Sound Out

The drop-down menu at the top lets you select which part of QuickTime's settings you want to monkey around with. Since we're solving a problem with sound output here, choose Sound Out from the top drop-down menu.

Choose Device for Playback Choose Device for Playback

4. Choose Device for Playback

In the next menu down, choose waveOut: Windows' preferred device (or select a specific sound card or USB audio output if you know which one you want to use).

Close QuickTime Settings Close QuickTime Settings

5. Close QuickTime Settings

That's it! There's no need to click any OK button, just close the QuickTime settings window. Restart iTunes, and your skipping problem should be solved.
