Show will go on in wake of last's year melee, alleged stabbing by rapper.

R&B star Ciara leads the field of nominees for the 2005 Vibe Awards, but the real question on everyone's mind is: Will anyone get stabbed this year?

The Vibe magazine event, which will be held November 12 in Los Angeles and broadcast three days later on UPN, hopes to avoid last year's onstage melee, during which hip-hop star and producer Dr. Dre was slapped in the face by a man who was later allegedly stabbed by G-Unit rapper Young Buck.

But event officials have insisted the show must go on and have rolled out the list of nominees today.

Ciara claimed five nominations, including one for "Vibe Vixen" and artist of the year, for which she will compete against Kanye West, Mariah Carey, John Legend, and 50 Cent.

For album of the year, the nominees are Get Lifted by Legend, Late Registration by West, The Documentary by The Game, The Emancipation of Mimi by Carey, and The Naked Truth by Lil' Kim.

Lil' Kim won't be at the show, however, because she's serving a 366-day sentence at a federal detention center in Philadelphia for lying to a grand jury about a 2001 shootout between her entourage and that of rival rapper Foxy Brown.

Jimmy James Johnson, the man who ran onstage and slapped Dr. Dre last year as Dre was a receiving a lifetime achievement award, was sentenced in September to a year in jail after he pleaded guilty to assaulting the rap icon.

Young Buck has pleaded not guilty and is free on bail awaiting trial.

In a short span of time, Kanye West went from hitmaking producer to just plain hitmaker, as his stellar production work earned him a solo record deal and soon his beats were accompanied by his own witty raps on a number of critically and commercially successful releases. The Game The Game

Compton's own the Game (aka Jayceon Taylor) issued his debut LP The Documentary in 2004 through Aftermath/G Unit/Universal. With everyone from Dr. Dre and 50 Cent to Nate Dogg, Kanye West, and Just Blaze contributing to the album, The Documentary made it clear from the outset that geographic squabbles weren't a part of the Game's agenda. Rapping...

Mariah Carey Mariah Carey

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her...

John Legend John Legend

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to go to college in Philadelphia, and it was...

Lil\' Kim Lil' Kim

After making her presence known on Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s debut album, Conspiracy, Lil' Kim launched a solo career in 1996 with the release of her first record, Hard Core. Dr. Dre Dr. Dre

More than any other rapper, Dr. Dre was responsible for moving away from the avant-noise and political stance of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions as well as the party vibes of old-school rap. Instead, Dre pioneered gangsta rap and his own variation of the sound, G-funk. BDP's early albums were hardcore but cautionary tales of the...

Young Buck Young Buck

To most, rapper Young Buck was a fresh face when he became a member of 50 Cent's crew G-Unit, but he spent a long time waiting on the bench before that. The Nashville, TN, native started rapping at 12 and was in a recording studio by 14, the same age he was when he began peddling narcotics. Cash Money's main man, Brian "Baby" Williams, caught a...

Once the Game surfaced as a force in hip-hop, a big deal was made of his dance with death. Apparently he was shot five times. Mariah Carey
The titular "Mimi" of The Emancipation of Mimi is, by all accounts, an alter ego of Mariah, a persona that captures Carey's true feelings and emotions. In case you didn't know what "emancipation" means, Mariah helpfully provides a dictionary definition of the word in the opening pages of the liner notes for her eighth proper album: it means "to...
