UK rockers sip from Potter's "Goblet"

October 24, 2005 at 11:20:00 AM

Pulp vocalist, member of Radiohead team up as Weird Sisters for performance at Hogwarts.

Pulp vocalist Jarvis Cocker and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and drummer Phil Selway will be seen next month in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, playing members of a band that performs at the Yule Ball at the Hogwarts school.

The group is rounded out by producer Jason Buckle and former Add N to (X) principal Steve Claydon. Three original songs from the combo, "Do the Hippogriff," "This Is the Night," and "Magic Works," can be found on the Goblet soundtrack, due November 15 via Warner Bros.

The score for the fourth film in the series was created by Patrick Doyle (Hamlet, Donnie Brasco), marking the first time John Williams did not handle that task for a Potter film.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, from director Mike Newell, opens November 18 in North America.

It should be noted, that Thom Yorke will be playing the grumpy gnome. No speaking parts, just a gnome crying in the background.

That's a really random line-up, but should be interesting anyway.

Most bands hit the big time immediately and fade away, or they build a dedicated following and slowly climb their way to the top. Pulp didn't follow either route. For the first 12 years of their existence, Pulp languished in near total obscurity, releasing a handful of albums and singles in the '80s to barely any attention. At the turn of the...

Radiohead Radiohead

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's...

Name-checking a diverse cast of progenitors including Varése, Xenakis, and Robert Moog, as well as Can and Stereolab, Add N to X are electro-historians of a sort, collectors of vintage synthesizer technology, and fierce propagators of the man-machine aesthetic (the cover of their second album features member Ann Shenton on the operating table...
