Longtime solo artist says he'd be happy to get back behind the drums and let original front man Peter Gabriel take over vocals.

On the first stop of his First Final Farewell Tour, British singer Phil Collins said yesterday that he's open to the idea of a Genesis reunion.

"There's a possibility," Collins told the Associated Press. "I'm open for it. If it doesn't happen, it won't be because we don't want to. It will just be because there are too many things in the way."

Collins is currently touring the Middle East as part of what he's calling his final tour, as a he hopes to spend more time with his family.

The 54-year-old Collins told reporters in Tel Aviv that he would even be willing to get back behind the drums if former front man Peter Gabriel wanted to return as the band's lead singer.

Genesis formed as a progressive rock group in 1967, with Gabriel as lead singer and Collins on drums.

Collins took over as singer after Gabriel quit the group in 1975 to become a solo artist. Genesis became more of a pop-rock act with Collins as its lead singer.

Collins left the band in 1996 to pursue his solo career full-time--as he'd already scored megahits with Against All Odds and In the Air Tonight.

The band continued on through a series of lineup changes for a few more years, eventually disbanding in 1998.

"We're all still good friends...," Collins told the AP.

Genesis Genesis

One of the most successful rock acts of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Genesis enjoyed a longevity exceeded only by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, in the process providing a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. The group had its roots in the Garden Wall, a band founded by 15 year olds Peter...

Phil Collins Phil Collins

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult-contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30-years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the...

Peter Gabriel Peter Gabriel

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. In his solo career, Gabriel was no less ambitious, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic,...

Phil Collins
The winner of the 1985 Grammy for Pop Album of the Year, No Jacket Required found Phil Collins fully embracing horn-driven pop music, drum machines, and sentimental ballads over his previous darker and more dramatic solo material. The record established him as a major commercial force, and as one of the most recognizable voices of the 1980s....
Phil Collins "But Seriously"
Phil Collins
Spawning four hit singles, But Seriously topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. While pursuing much of the same formula as on No Jacket Required, there was also a move toward more organic production as Collins abandoned some of the drum machines and prominent keyboards in the up-tempo numbers in favor of live instrumentation. The...
Genesis "Invisible Touch"
Genesis
With Invisible Touch, Genesis' transition from prog rockers to pop superstars was completed. Filled with slick, synth-heavy, radio-friendly numbers, the record was their biggest seller. Artistically, the record's merits are more dubious. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford contribute little of imagination to the musical mix, while the most of the...
Genesis "Trespass"
Genesis
Genesis' first truly progressive album, and their first record for the Charisma label (although Trespass was released in America by ABC, which is how MCA came to have it), is important mostly as a formative effort. Genesis "Foxtrot"
Genesis
This was the point where all of the talent simmering and occasionally boiling up out of Genesis blew the lid off the pot. There isn't a weak song here, and the two showpieces, "Watcher of the Skies" and "Supper's Ready," presented the group at its strongest in medium-length and extended-length songs. The lyrical complexities of the latter were...
Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"
Genesis
The group's only double studio album was the culmination of their early period, featuring Peter Gabriel in a bravura performance in the role of Rael, a New York street hustler, in this musical drama.
