Fiona Apple, Death Cab for Cutie, MIA, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, and others are up for award, which replaces the now-defunct Shortlist Prize.

The New Pantheon Music Prize--the replacement for the prized-but-now-defunct Shortlist Prize--named its nominees this week, tabbing an eclectic list of acts for the top prize among independent artists.

The 10-band nominee list reads like a who's who of the indie darlings of 2005.

The biggest name among them is Fiona Apple, whose oft-delayed Extraordinary Machine sold more than 300,000 copies in the US by the end of 2005. Also included is Death Cab for Cutie, the pop-rock band whose Plans was nominated for a Grammy for best alternative album.

The list also includes Animal Collective's Feels, Antony and the Johnsons' I am a Bird Now, Arcade Fire's Funeral, Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, The Decemberists' Picaresque, Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Heartbreak, MIA's Arular, and Sufjan Stevens' Illinois.

The New Pantheon prize steps into the void left by the Shortlist Prize, which died due to the infighting between its creators Tom Sarig and Greg Spotts. Sarig put together the New Pantheon with an almost identical cast and structure as its predecessor.

Its star-studded list of nominators includes Beck, John Legend, Ric Ocasek of the Cars, Elton John, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the Roots, Elijah Wood, Margaret Cho, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda, Suzanne Vega, Dave Matthews, Keith Urban, and Adam Brody and Josh Schwartz from The O.C., the SoCal soap opera known for featuring the music of emerging indie bands in its show.

TV On The Radio's Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes landed the 2004 Shortlist Prize.

Each panelist initially nominated up to seven albums, and that list was whittled to 10 by the panel.

The winner of the Pantheon will be announced at a concert in Los Angeles on February 6, with many of the finalists set to perform at the event.

Check out the Pantheon's Web site to see who nominated what.

Bloc Party Bloc Party

Equally inspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Gang of Four, and the Cure, South London art-punkers Bloc Party mix angular sonics with pop structures. Consisting of singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist/singer Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong, the band was formerly known as Angel Range and Union before settling on...

Antony and the Johnsons Antony and the Johnsons

Growing up in California, Antony felt himself to be the consummate outsider until he came face to face with the image of Boy George on the cover of the Culture Club's 1982 debut album, Kissing to Be Clever. He relocated to New York City in 1990, where he found a world more accepting of his avant-garde sensibilities and sexually ambiguous nature....

The Decemberists The Decemberists

Colin Meloy leads the Decemberists, a five-piece outfit whose pop sound has listeners comparing the band with the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle & Sebastian. Meloy, who hails from Missoula, MT, is the main songwriter for the group. Rounding out the lineup are Ezra Holbrook on drums, Nate Query on upright bass, Jenny Conlee on accordion,...

Sufjan Stevens Sufjan Stevens

A singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sufjan Stevens started his venture in the music world as a member of Marzuki, a folk-rock band based in Holland, MI. Following the release of two full-length albums with the group, Stevens decided to go solo in late 1999, investing fully in a career that was waiting to shine by itself. During...

Kings of Leon Kings of Leon

The southern rock outfit Kings of Leon is comprised of the brothers Caleb (guitar), Nathan (drums), and Jared Followill (bass). While traveling across America's heartland during the late '80s and '90s with their evangelist father, the boys listened to the Rolling Stones and Neil Young. By the time Kings of Leon settled in Nashville in 1998,...

Arcade Fire Arcade Fire

Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and Win's kid brother William Butler formed the Arcade Fire in summer 2003. Bloc Party "Silent Alarm"
Bloc Party
Much more polished, serious, and straight-ahead than their initial EPs suggested, Bloc Party's debut album, Silent Alarm, reveals them as a band equally informed by taut art-punk and the grand gestures and earnestness of groups like Coldplay and U2. Though they're not quite as stadium-sized expansive as either of those two bands (yet), Bloc...
Antony and the Johnsons "I Am a Bird Now"
Antony and the Johnsons
Antony and the Johnsons' second full-length recording, the haunting and affecting I Am a Bird Now, is a far more intimate affair than their debut. Antony's bluesy parlor room cadence is more upfront here, resulting in a listening experience that's both exhilarating and disquieting. "Hope There's Someone" is a somber opener, and its plea for...
The Decemberists "Picaresque"
The Decemberists
"The Infanta," the thunderous opening track on the Decemberists' fluid and predictably studious Picaresque, rolls in like a ghost ship at 40 knots in a hail of cannon fire with a mad English professor at the wheel. Colin Meloy and his esteemed West Coast colleagues have no qualms about beginning their third full-length record with a processional...
Sufjan Stevens "Illinois"
Sufjan Stevens
With two states down and only 48 to go, Sufjan Stevens' ambitious musical map of the Unites States of America should be completed -- if he puts out one a year -- sometime around 2053. It's a daunting task (and not an entirely original one at that), but if each subsequent record is as good as Illinois, fans who live long enough to witness the...
Kings of Leon "Aha Shake Heartbreak"
Kings of Leon
The mysterious Followill family returns to the front porch/garage on the Kings of Leon's engaging sophomore effort, Aha Shake Heartbreak. On Youth & Young Manhood, the Kings gave Southern rock a swift kick in the rear, sounding like Lynyrd Skynyrd posing as a bunch of N.Y.U. film students (or vice versa). For their latest, the Nashville quartet...
Arcade Fire "Funeral"
Arcade Fire
The Arcade Fire are not an emo band. Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the group's emotional assault -- rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in the liner notes -- is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of that genre's angst-fueled...
