Mobile download service licenses music from The Orchard, one of the top digital distributors of independent music.

Two of the most active companies in the digital music space hooked up today in a licensing deal, with The Orchard agreeing to license its 700,000-song catalog to mobile download firm Groove Mobile.

The Orchard distributes music from independent labels like Lookout!, Fierce Panda, Saregama, Shanacie, SST, Delicious Vinyl, and Epsa, while Groove has created the download infrastructure for mobile download services from Sprint Nextel, Singapore-based Singtel, and UK-based wireless carrier Orange, owned by France Telecom.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal could be a boon to independent artists whose digital distribution rights have been acquired by The Orchard, and it gives the mobile download services that use Groove a booster shot of music from 22,000 artists from 73 countries. That catalog includes releases from several stars before they signed major label deals, including Ray Charles, Green Day, John Legend, Coldplay, Afrika Bambaataa, Ravi Shankar, Black Flag, and Public Enemy.

"Groove Mobile and The Orchard understand that today's mobile music fans want to get direct access to a wide variety of independent artists," Orchard chief Greg Scholl said in a statement. "With Groove Mobile, The Orchard's artists--which represent virtually every genre of music--have a great opportunity to put their music directly in front of new fans and reach out to old ones."

Ray Charles

Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country....

Green Day Green Day

Out of all the post-Nirvana American alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream, Green Day was second only to Pearl Jam in terms of influence. At their core, Green Day was simply punk revivalists, recharging the energy of speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs. Though their music wasn't particularly innovative, they brought the sound...

John Legend John Legend

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to go to college in Philadelphia, and it was...

Coldplay Coldplay

Coldplay never intended to become England's favorite rock & roll sons when their signature rock melodies ruled the charts throughout 2000. The Brit rock quartet -- composed of Chris Martin (vocals/piano), Jon Buckland (guitar), Will Champion (drums), and Guy Berryman (bass) -- yearned to mess around a bit, plucking their own acoustics for fun...

Austin found the tapes, but...
Green Day "American Idiot"
Green Day
It's a bit tempting to peg Green Day's sprawling, ambitious, brilliant seventh album, American Idiot, as their version of a Who album, the next logical step forward from the Kinks-inspired popcraft of their underrated 2000 effort, Warning, but things aren't quite that simple. American Idiot is an unapologetic, unabashed rock opera, a form that...
