Jay-Z: Cam dis is "trash"

After Cam'ron holds a press conference following his dis track about him, rapper-turned-exec calls it an "obvious ploy for attention."

Two days after formally squashing his ongoing feud with Nas by signing him to a record deal, acclaimed rapper and Def Jam president Jay-Z responded to the barbs of another rapper, Cam'ron.

Jay-Z called Cam'ron's "You Got It" dis record against him an "obvious ploy for attention" and a publicity stunt to help Cam'ron promote his upcoming album, Killa Season, which will be released in April.

"I'm torn," he told MTV News. "I feel like I would be stupid to even pay that any attention, because it's such a ploy. [He's] holding press conferences behind [the dis record]. The MC in me is like, 'That's too easy [to come back at him.]' That's not even a good dis record.

"That sh** is trash," he continued. "I'm torn. We'll see what happens. Maybe on my time we'll deal with it, but I'm not really pressed. I'm inspired by good artistic sh**. Cam's sh** is not artistic. There's nothing good about it. Everything about it is an obvious ploy to get attention. Nobody wants to get used. You're just using me. Of course he had to go that far."

Cam held a press conference in Tribeca yesterday to discuss his beef with Jay-Z. "You Got It" includes barbs directed at Jay-Z's age, his appearance, and his girlfriend, Beyonce.

"I'm ready for whatever," he said about Jay-Z's possible reaction. "Do what you're going to do."

On Wednesday, Cam'ron also addressed the ongoing investigation into who shot him in Washington, DC, in October. He said he has been told he could get 30 days in jail for not cooperating and that he would rather do the time than talk with investigators.

"There was a DC cop present right behind my car when the shooting took place," he said. "You also have a cellular telephone, a car and fingerprints, but you have nobody to arrest? Why do you need to talk to me? Basically, I'm going to jail for being shot."

Reached at a company retreat by MTV News, Jay-Z said he expects to do at least a song with Nas for his first album on Def Jam, due out later this year.

"[I'm proud to have him on Def Jam] for so many different levels," he said. "One, he's been at the forefront of hip-hop since he's been out. [Illmatic] is arguably one of the best albums ever made. To have that down with the team, it's just a beautiful thing. Two, it says so much about the culture. It shows another way. [The media] always portrays us like we're ignorant. It shows another ending. I think it's bigger for the culture."
