2K Sports picks a soundtrack littered with artists from Matador Records, including Guided By Voices, Belle & Sebastian, Pavement, and Yo La Tengo.

The legendary baseball prowess of former Guided By Voices front man Robert Pollard notwithstanding, the folks at 2K Sports made an unorthodox but rather compelling choice for its in-game music for Major League Baseball 2K6, which hits stores next month.

Stephen Malkmus Stephen Malkmus

The soundtrack is dominated by indie rock, mostly from the ever-expanding catalog of Matador Records, with artists like GBV, Belle & Sebastian, Pavement, Stephen Malkmus, Yo La Tengo, and recent major label departure Interpol.

Matador said the soundtrack will be all previously released tracks that it licensed to 2K Sports for the game, so there won't be any new tunes inspired by the riveting performance put on by the US in the World Baseball Classic earlier this month.

No tracklist yet, but here's the full list of artists on the soundtrack:

Bear vs. Shark

Belle and Sebastian

Cornelius

DJ Spooky

Early Man

Green Carnation

Guided By Voices

Interpol

Mogwai

Pavement

Preston School of Industry

Stephen Malkmus

Pretty Girls Make Graves

The Double

Fall of Troy

Yo La Tengo

Guided by Voices Guided by Voices

Inspired equally by jangle pop and arty post-punk, Guided by Voices created a series of trebly, hissy indie rock records filled with infectiously brief pop songs that fell somewhere between the British Invasion and prog rock. After recording six self-released albums between 1986 and 1992, the Dayton, OH-based band attracted a handful of fans...

Belle & Sebastian Belle & Sebastian

A band that takes its name from a French children's television series about a boy and his dog would almost have to be precious, and to be certain, Belle & Sebastian are precious. But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes -- they are private but not insular, pretty...

Pavement Pavement

With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, Pavement were one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge from the American underground in the '90s. Pavement, along with Sebadoh, were the leaders of the lo-fi movement that dominated U.S. indie rock in...

Yo La Tengo Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition -- three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim -- the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe prior to finding success as a performer. So...

Stephen Malkmus Stephen Malkmus

After Pavement announced they were going on hiatus at the end of 1999, the status of one of America's finest indie rock bands was a mystery for the first half of 2000. It became clearer that summer, however, when it was revealed that both singer/songwriter/guitarists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were preparing solo albums. Malkmus was...

Interpol Interpol

New York's Interpol reminds anyone who has ever heard post-punk bands like Joy Division and the Chameleons of those exact bands, plus a few more. The roots of the band -- as far as its members are considered -- can be traced back to a partnership between Daniel Kessler (a guitarist and vocalist) and a fellow New York University student named...
