Fans who buy band's upcoming Stadium Arcadium double album will be able to preorder tix to summer concert tour.
Let the bundling begin.
Apple's iTunes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Ticketmaster said today that they are teaming up on a promotional deal whereby fans who buy the band's upcoming Stadium Arcadium double album will get access to presale tix for the Peppers' summer tour, which is set to start in August.
Stadium goes on sale May 9, but fans can preorder it starting today for $19.90 and will get the download on May 9. Fans that preorder will immediately receive a code that can be used to access the presale tickets at Ticketmaster.com starting May 9, before they go on sale to the general public on May 13.
Those fans will also get a download of the new single, "Dani California," an exclusive audio interview with the band, a video chronicling the making of "Dani California," and a full color digital booklet.
"This is an incredible offering for fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes, in a statement. "We've put together a package that's unrivaled in the music industry for launching a new album, exclusive videos, and a concert tour."
The deal comes on the heels of Warner Music's decision to release the entire Chili Peppers archive--complete with unreleased tracks--exclusively on iTunes.
The concept of bundling concert tickets and other fare with an album sale isn't new. Sales of Prince's 2004 album Musicology ballooned when the artist bundled the album with every concert ticket he sold, and eMusic launched a campaign last month whereby people who buy tickets to an upcoming show by the Ric Ocasek-less New Cars will get 10 free downloads from either the Cars or tourmate Blondie with their ticket purchase.
At a digital-music panel at last month's South by Southwest festival, Jeremy Welt, vice president of New Media at Warner Brothers Records, said bundling will become more prevalent in the digital age.
"[Those kinds of deals] are something that should be done by everybody," Welt said.
