This weekend's desert music festival unveils schedule, with Madonna tabbed for a 50-minute set in the dance tent and headlining sets from Depeche Mode, Tool, Franz Ferdinand, and Massive Attack.

The two biggest rappers from Chicago will play back-to-back Saturday at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, as Kanye West has been added to the lineup and will play right after Common, whose album Be Kanye produced and released on his GOOD Music label.

The Material Mom will play for the glowstick crowd. The Material Mom will play for the glowstick crowd.

West is the latest addition to a lineup that features a who's who of modern rock, hip-hop, electronic, and indie rock.

The festival, which takes place Saturday and Sunday in Indio, California, also released its performance schedule today.

As expected, Depeche Mode and Tool will headline the main stage on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, while Madonna will perform a 50-minute set in the Sahara dance tent Sunday night. No band is scheduled to perform on the main stage during Madonna's set.

West will perform a 50-minute set on the main stage Saturday right after Common. Sigur Ros will follow West, and Franz Ferdinand will play just before Depeche Mode's 90-minute headlining set at 9:30 p.m.

Coachella's outdoor theater on Saturday will feature performances by My Morning Jacket, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Eagles of Death Metal, Atmosphere, and She Wants Revenge. Daft Punk is the headliner in the dance tent Saturday night.

The Rakes will play the headlining set on the Mojave indie rock stage, with sets from Living Things, Cat Power, Ladytron, TV on the Radio, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Wolfmother before them.

On Sunday, the main stage will showcase performances by Hasidic reggae rapper Matisyahu, Sleater-Kinney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Massive Attack before art-metal band Tool takes the stage for its first show in the US since 2002.

At the outdoor theater, Bloc Party, Digable Planets, Mogwai, the Go! Team, and Scissor Sisters will perform on Sunday.

British post-punkers Art Brut will headline the Mojave indie stage Sunday night, preceded by performances by Dungen, Coheed & Cambria, Editors, stellastar, Wolf Parade, Metric, and James Blunt.

Kanye West Kanye West

In a short span of time, Kanye West went from hitmaking producer to just plain hitmaker, as his stellar production work earned him a solo record deal and soon his beats were accompanied by his own witty raps on a number of critically and commercially successful releases. His flamboyant personality also made a mark. West showcased a dapper...

Madonna Madonna

After a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle...

Depeche Mode Depeche Mode

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s; one of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, Depeche Mode began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more...

Tool Tool

Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock. Or maybe it was introducing the self-absorbed pretension of art rock to the wearing grind of post-thrash metal -- the order really doesn't matter. Though Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were...

Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand

Glasgow's art-damaged rock quartet Franz Ferdinand -- named for the Austro-Hungarian Archduke whose murder sparked World War I -- features bassist Bob Hardy, guitarist Nick McCarthy, drummer Paul Thomson, and singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos. In late 2001, Kapranos and Hardy had begun working on music together when they met McCarthy, a classically...

Massive Attack Massive Attack

The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most innovative and influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound -- a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples -- set the pace for much of the dance music to emerge throughout the 1990s,...

In an age where major labels dictate that new releases from bands appear on record store shelves every 18 months or so, rare is the artist given freedom and ability to reflect and stretch out to explore creative evolution and release music as an artist, rather than the prepackaged predictability of an entertainer. Franz Ferdinand
Opting not to fix what broke them, You Could Have It So Much Better serves up more of the stylish, angular sound that worked so well on Franz Ferdinand's debut. After years of rehearsing in abandoned Glasgow warehouses and playing in relatively obscure groups like the Yummy Fur, it's perfectly understandable why the band chose not to mess with a...

Massive Attack
Interesting and pleasant, but the soundtrack to Louis Leterrier's Danny the Dog will throw longtime Massive Attack fans for a loop. The band's trademark deep sound is untraceable for the most part. It's probably a testament to how hard they stuck to the soundtracking rules, but this program music is rather run-of-the-mill, especially when...
