Some of the biggest names in music, including Bono, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Dixie Chicks, Sting, and Stevie Wonder will appear on forthcoming Duets album.
Tony Bennett has drawing power.
In spades.
The legendary jazz vocalist, set to celebrate his 80th birthday August 3, is ready to release his Duets album, which boasts a guest list that includes a who's who of the music world.
Tony Bennett: Duets, which will hit stores September 26, will feature Bennett singing with the likes of Barbra Streisand, Bono, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Sting, Dixie Chicks, John Legend, Juanes, Tim McGraw, Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, George Michael, Michael Buble, James Taylor, Diana Krall, and k.d. lang.
"Each duet artist brought their own soul and sensibility to their song performance, and it was a wonderful gift for my birthday to be able to record with these talented musicians," Bennett said in a statement.
The only solo track on the album will be Bennett singing his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
Despite the fact that many duets records now use technology that lets the vocalists record in separate places and at different times, each of the songs were recorded in a "live" setting, something that was a priority for Bennett.
"I was on the road all last year, and there is nothing like that live dynamic, so working live in the studio with Tony has been a great experience," John Legend said in a statement. "I would like to try that for my own recordings."
Big box retailer Target is sponsoring a star-studded 80th birthday party for Bennett in New York City August 3, the same day the album's as-yet-unnamed first single will be released to radio. A prime-time network special with Bennett and several of the guest vocalists is also planned for the fall.
A documentary on Tony's life and career, executive produced by Clint Eastwood, is in the works for 2007, as is an art book of Tony's original paintings.
Bennett, who first joined Columbia Records in 1950, has been signed to the label longer than any other recording artist in its history.
