Korn's Davis itching to return

June 21, 2006 at 09:14:00 AM

Recovering from a near-fatal blood infection, frontman says he's excited for this summer's Family Values tour with Stone Sour, Deftones, Flyleaf, and Dir en gray.

Korn's Jonathan Davis is happy to be alive after a recent near-fatal bout with a blood infection, and he's itching to get back on stage.

"I feel good, but I feel like I want to jump out of my skin," he told Billboard.com by phone from his Los Angeles home, where he will rest until the July 27 start of Korn's Family Values tour.

As previously reported, Davis was rushed to a London hospital earlier this month after developing the blood disorder immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), forcing Korn to scrap the rest of its European tour.

"We had just done a show in Hamburg, Germany," Davis recalls. "I was on the bus and noticed all this bruising all over my body. It wasn't bad, just here and there, but I was like, what the hell? This ain't right. I don't remember hitting myself or anything, and I never bruise."

From the hospital, Davis urged his bandmates to go on with their scheduled show as part of Britain's Download Festival, even if it meant finding substitute vocalists.

"I talked to guitarist Munky and told him, 'Dude, please do this.' They didn't want to do it," Davis says. "But he went out and found all the singers and they did it. I saw some video and it was pretty funny. The singers did the best they could do."

Davis has responded very well to treatment for ITP, which drastically lowers the number of platelets in the blood.

"ITP is a rare blood disease," Davis says. "Kids get it and it goes away, but adults get it and it doesn't. But the way I'm responding, going from five platelets to 350 in seven days--people sit in the hospital for months and months trying to do that."

Korn is hoping to make up the European dates later this year, but for now is focused on Family Values, which will also feature Stone Sour, Deftones, Flyleaf, and Dir en gray.

"Having Deftones is a big deal because our fans have been waiting for years and years for us to tour together again," Davis says. "And Dir en gray is this crazy, psychotic band from Japan. They have a really big following, even though nobody understands what the hell they're saying."

Asked if his medical ordeal will find its way into his songwriting, Davis quickly answers, "Oh, I'm sure it will. This has been one of the scariest times in my life. I'm sure you'll be hearing about it."

Korn's cathartic alternative metal sound positioned the group among the most popular and provocative to emerge during the post-grunge era. Korn began their existence as the Bakersfield, CA-based metal band LAPD, which included guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch, bassist Reginald "Fieldy Snuts" Arvizu, and drummer David...

Deftones Deftones

Along with Limp Bizkit, the Deftones are often considered to be disciples of Korn, but in fact, they've been around for just as long (if not longer). They were also one of the first groups to alternate heavy riffs and screamed vocals with more ethereal music and hushed singing -- spawning a fair amount of imitators in their wake. The group first...

Although Slipknot made their mainstream debut in the late '90s, singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root got their start a few years before in Stone Sour. Described as a cross between Metallica and Alice in Chains, the group was put aside when the two men joined Slipknot. In the spring of 2002, Root and Taylor got in contact with original...

Flyleaf Flyleaf

Heavy music and pained lyrics go together like cake and ice cream, and Belton, Texas quintet, Flyleaf, aren't about to break with tradition. But while many loud rockers reopen old wounds by singing about their broken homes and broken hearts, Flyleaf confront past traumas to heal old scars and prove in the process that hope shines brighter than...

What sets Stone Sour apart from others of their breed is the band's ability to create smooth, radio-friendly alternative metal songs while simultaneously not boring the people who have heard way too much from post-grunge groups. The secret to this lies in guitarist James Root's unique style and drummer Roy Mayorga's unyielding intensity. Root...

Every few years or so, a new heavy metal subgenre rears its head. In the late '90s and early 21st century, there were "nu metal" and "emo," both of which included lots of hardcore-esque screaming combined with the usual metallic elements (heavy guitar riffs, hard-hitting drumming, etc.). While both new genres were the "metal genre of choice" for...
