Star-studded concert last September at Madison Square Garden included performances by Dave Matthews, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz, and Jimmy Buffett.

Nearly a year ago, artists like Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, and Simon & Garfunkel convened at New York's Madison Square Garden for a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert. A double-disc DVD chronicling the evening, dubbed From the Big Apple to the Big Easy, will arrive August 22 via Rhino.

Produced by Ken Ehrlich and Quint Davis, the DVD will also raise money for the cause, with 100 percent of the profits to be donated to relief efforts. Performances like Elton John's "Levon," a duet by Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffett on Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," Lenny Kravitz' "Hercules," and three songs from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are among the show highlights.

A number of intriguing collaborations are featured, including Cyndi Lauper with Allen Toussaint, Jimmy Buffett with Dave Matthews, and Paul Simon and the Neville Brothers with the Meters.

The South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews formed the Dave Matthews Band in Virginia in the early '90s. Featuring Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford, the group's music presents a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. The band...

Simon & Garfunkel Simon & Garfunkel

The most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel crafted a series of memorable hit albums and singles featuring their choirboy harmonies, ringing acoustic, and electric guitars; and Simon's acute, finely wrought songwriting. The pair always inhabited the more polished end of the folk-rock spectrum, and were sometimes...

Elton John Elton John

In terms of sales and lasting popularity, Elton John was the biggest pop superstar of the early '70s. Initially marketed as a singer/songwriter, John soon revealed he could craft Beatlesque pop and pound out rockers with equal aplomb. He could dip into soul, disco, and country, as well as classic pop balladry and even progressive rock. His...

Elvis Costello Elvis Costello

When Elvis Costello's first record was released in 1977, his bristling cynicism and anger linked him with the punk and new wave explosion. A cursory listen to My Aim Is True proves that the main connection that Costello had with the punks was his unbridled passion. He tore through rock's back pages taking whatever he wanted, as well as borrowing...

Lenny Kravitz Lenny Kravitz

There may have been other "retro" rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed to a single style as he's touched upon such genres as soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk, and ballads over the years. Born in New York on May 26, 1964 (his mother was actress Roxie Roker, best-known for her role as...

Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett has translated his easygoing Gulf Coast persona into more than just a successful recording career -- he has expanded into clothing, nightclubs, and literature. It wouldn't seem that a solo album from Dave Matthews would be all that different from a Dave Matthews Band album, since he's not only the singer/songwriter/guitarist; he leads the band and gives it its very name. That assumption turns out to be incorrect, since Some Devil sounds and feels much different than any DMB effort. With Some Devil,...

This is an early compilation of sides by the youthful Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel, working together as Tom & Jerry and augmented with numerous early Paul Simon solo sides, cut under such aliases as Jerry Landis, Tico, and Tico & The Triumphs. Elton John
Elton John returned to the sound and aesthetic of his classic early-'70s work with 2001's Songs From the West Coast, finding critical acclaim, if not much commercial success. Not that the lack of sales greatly bothered Elton -- in many interviews, including one with Entertainment Weekly the week before Peachtree Road was released in November...
Elvis Costello "The River in Reverse"
Elvis Costello
It's impossible to consider The River in Reverse without taking the devastation Hurricane Katrina wreaked upon New Orleans into account. Indeed, it's quite likely that this collaboration between Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint would not even have occurred if it weren't for that cataclysmic event. They've collaborated before -- Toussaint wrote...

Early in the 2000s, Jimmy Buffett experienced one of his periodic revivals thanks to the legions of contemporary country singers indebted to his sunny, relaxed party music.
