"Hips Don't Lie" and "Dani California" dominate video music award nominations with seven each, while Madonna and Panic! At the Disco nab five each.

MTV's 2006 Video Music Awards will be serving up a heaping dish of Shakira and "Dani California."

The Colombian pop star's smash hit "Hips Don't Lie" and the catchy Red Hot Chili Peppers' single garnered seven award nominations apiece today, topping a strong field that also includes multiple nominees Madonna, Panic! At the Disco, and Christina Aguilera.

The annual awards show, broadcast live this year on August 31 from Radio City Music Hall in NYC, will feature performances from Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Panic! At The Disco, the Killers, and rappers T.I. and Ludacris. MTV said the Raconteurs, the rock band consisting of White Stripes' frontman Jack White, solo artist Brendan Benson, and two members of the Greenhornes, will provide the live "soundtrack" of the event. The network said it will announce the show's host and other performers in the coming weeks.

"The VMA's is the first place you'll see Justin Timberlake perform, an all new show stopping performance from Beyonce, the much anticipated return of The Killers, T.I., hip hop's newest mega star and the breakout band, Panic! At The Disco," said MTV President, Christina Norman. "This is the beginning of what will no doubt be the most star-studded event and the hottest ticket of the year." MTV is also for the first time opening up voting in all categories to the fans, allowing fans to vote on each category, not just the traditional "viewer's choice" award, starting today.

Madonna and Aguilera smooch it out at the 2003 VMAs. Madonna and Aguilera smooch it out at the 2003 VMAs.

"Hips Don't Lie," "Dani California," Madonna's "Hung Up," Panic! At the Disco's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," and Aguilera's 1940s jazzclub-themed "Ain't No Other Man" video each scored a nomination for video of the year. Shakira, Madonna, and Aguilera are also nominated for best female video, vying with Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" (two noms) and Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" (three noms).

Busta Rhymes' twice-nominated "Touch It (Remix)" video, featuring Mary J. Blige, Rah Digga, Missy Elliott, Lloyd Banks, Papoose, and DMX, will compete with Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me," James Blunt's "You're Beautiful," Kanye West's "Gold Digger" (two noms), and T.I.'s "What You Know" (two noms) for the top male video.

The nominees for best group video are the Chili Peppers' "Dani California," Fall Out Boy's "Dance, Dance" (two noms), and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" (three noms).

Also for the first time, MTV has added two video game-related categories. Nominees for best video game soundtrack include EA's Final Night Round 3 and Burnout Revenge, Atari's Driver: Parallel Lines and Mark Ecko's Getting Up, and 2K Games' NBA 2K6. For best video game score, Jesper Kyd (Hitman: Blood Money), Tom Salta (Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter), Even "Magnet" Johansen (Dreamfall: The Longest Journey), Jeremy Soule (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), and Electroplankton's user-genereated soundtrack each scored nominations.

Shakira Shakira

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez broke down the doors to English-language success. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Red Hot Chili Peppers

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the...

Madonna Madonna

After a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle...

Panic! at the Disco Panic! at the Disco

Just barely out of high school, emo-pop outfit Panic! at the Disco burst out of suburban Las Vegas in 2005 with their full-length debut, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. Taking their name from a line in Name Taken's "Panic," the group materialized when friends Spencer Smith (drums) and Ryan Ross (guitar) grew tired of covering blink-182 tunes...

Christina Aguilera Christina Aguilera

After Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera was the most popular female singer of the late-'90s teen pop revival. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Aguilera was a technically skilled singer with a genuinely powerful voice, belting out her uptempo dance numbers and ballads with a diva's panache. Born Christina Maria Aguilera on December 18, 1980,...

Justin Timberlake Justin Timberlake

As both a member of *NSYNC and a solo artist, Southern superstar Justin Timberlake has played a major role in the teen pop explosion of the '90s and 2000s. Like similar teen pop favorites -- who have included the Backstreet Boys, C-Note, Christina Aguilera, Hanson, the Spice Girls, and Britney Spears -- Timberlake usually doesn't get much...

Beyoncé Beyoncé

Born in Houston in the fall of 1981, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles started performing at age seven. From dance classes to singing in the church choir, Beyoncé was a natural. She and cousin Kelly Rowland met Latavia Roberson during this time, and the trio formed a group with Letoya Luckett. Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé's father and Rowland's legal guardian,...

The Killers The Killers

Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), and Ronnie Vannucci (drums) took the fashionista pop world by storm in summer 2004 with "Somebody Told Me." The perfectly stylish song pulls from the band's influences -- the Smiths, New Order, Oasis, and the Cure -- and it was just enough to get them on MTV. Part...

T.I. T.I.

Once dubbed "the Jay-Z of the South" by Pharrell Williams, T.I. gradually came into his own and established himself as one of rap's greatest and most successful MCs during the early 2000s. Like Jay-Z, T.I. -- born Clifford Harris in Atlanta, GA -- has always carried a balance of smoothness and toughness, and though 2001's I'm Serious (released...

The Raconteurs The Raconteurs

A self-described "new band made up of old friends," the Raconteurs feature the White Stripes' Jack White and power pop maestro Brendan Benson on vocals, keyboards, and guitars, and the Greenhornes' drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence as the group's rhythm section. The idea for the band began when Benson and White collaborated on the...

Shakira delights in confounding expectations, and nowhere is that better seen than in how she secured a massive crossover audience on her own terms. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Indulgence has long been a way of life for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, yet they resisted the siren's call of the double album until 2006's Stadium Arcadium. Sure, 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik was as long as a classic double LP, but such distinctions mattered little in the era when vinyl gave way to CD, and they matter less now, as...

When Christina Aguilera released her garish, sexually charged sophomore effort, Stripped, in 2002, it seemed that she pushed her obsessions with tweaking taboos just a little too far. It's hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there's only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes' eccentric mastermind Jack White.
