Sub Pop Records acts including Sleater-Kinney, Hot Hot Heat, Mudhoney provide music to hip-check by.

With the NHL offseason already about half over, it's time for hockey fans to gear up for the preseason, and with it the annual releases of league-licensed games from 2K Sports and Electronic Arts. EA tipped its hand on the bands contributing to the NHL 07 soundtrack last month, and 2K Sports shot back today with its own list of big-name bands for NHL 2K7.

Sleater-Kinney Sleater-Kinney

Rock is the order of the day for both games, but where EA showed punkish tendencies with its lineup, 2K Games has enlisted acts from the indie pioneers at Sub Pop Records to provide the tunes for NHL 2K7. The featured acts in 2K7 include the soon-to-be-defunct Sleater-Kinney, Band of Horses, Hot Hot Heat, Mudhoney, and The Postal Service. In total, Sub Pop artists will provide 12 of the soundtrack's 18 songs.

NHL 2K7 is set for a September release on the Xbox 360, Xbox, and the PlayStation 2, with a PlayStation 3 release to follow before the end of the year. The game's full soundtrack is listed below.

Sleater-Kinney Sleater-Kinney

The anthemic Olympia, WA-based punk trio Sleater-Kinney formed from the ashes of Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17, a pair of groups that rode the first wave of the riot grrrl movement. Singer/guitarists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein first met in 1992, when Tucker was one half of the duo Heavens to Betsy; Brownstein, a classically trained...

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Seattle, WA's Band of Horses plays dense, aching mid-tempo indie rock reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Formed in 2004 by multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Matthew Brooke out of the ashes of former incarnation Carissa's Wierd, the group caught the attention of Sub Pop during a show with friends and future lablemates Iron & Wine. The...

Hot Hot Heat Hot Hot Heat

Beginning as a noisy, synth-based combo in 1999, Victoria, British Colombia's Hot Hot Heat evolved into an aggressively catchy indie rock band two years later, when keyboardist Steve Bays took on the vocal duties, and guitarist Dante DeCaro joined their ranks. The group's new lineup -- which also featured founding members Paul Hawley on drums...

Mudhoney Mudhoney

Nirvana may have been the band that put an entire generation in flannel, and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden both sold a lot more records, but Mudhoney were truly the band that made the '90s grunge rock movement possible. Mudhoney were the first real success story for Sub Pop Records; their indie-scene success laid the groundwork for the movement that...

Nebula Nebula

Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano formed Nebula in 1997 after breaking away from desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu, eventually recruiting bassist Mark Abshire. This power trio specializes in feedback-drenched heavy rock, incorporating liberal doses of Black Sabbath riffery, psychedelia, and space rock. The band released a number of EPs...

The Postal Service The Postal Service

Named for the way they traded sounds and ideas, the Postal Service is an electronica-meets-indie rock supergroup featuring Jimmy Tamborello (of Dntel and Figurine), and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard; Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis, and former Tattle Tale and solo artist Jen Wood provide backing vocals. Tamborello and Gibbard first worked together...

Sleater-Kinney
Far from the retreat implied in its title, The Woods is another passionate statement from Sleater-Kinney, equally inspired by the call-to-arms of their previous album, One Beat, and the give-and-take of their live sets, particularly their supporting slot on Pearl Jam's 2003 tour. Throughout their career, the band has found ways to refine and...

Mudhoney
Did anyone ever attribute much of a social conscience to Mudhoney back in the day when they were "The Guys Who Built Grunge"? All these years later, their outrage at the state of the world around them has finally reared its head on their seventh studio album, Under a Billion Suns. Don't worry, Mudhoney have not gotten goopy or sensitive, they've...
Nebula "Apollo"
Nebula
With Kyuss now long gone, Monster Magnet traveling distant galaxies, and Fu Manchu driving their graffiti-decorated vans over groove-rock desert highways somewhere in the distance, are Nebula the last of the prototypical stoner rock Mohicans? Strictly speaking, no, since they themselves were relative late arrivals to the scene, having sprung...

Coming off their work on Dntel's beautiful This Is the Dream of Evan and Chan, Jimmy Tamborello and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard team up again for their full-length debut as Postal Service, Give Up. Instead of covering that EP's territory again, with this album the duo crafts a poppier, new wave-inflected sound that recalls Tamborello's...
