A Stroke sets solo sail

August 4, 2006 at 03:11:00 PM

Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. will be joined on his solo debut by Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, Ben Kweller, and Fountain of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter.

The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. will release his solo debut, Yours to Keep, on October 9 in the United Kingdom. There are currently no plans to release the set in the United States.

The 10-track set, on the Rough Trade label, features guest turns from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas and the band's manager, Ryan Gentles, as well as from Sean Lennon, Fountains of Wayne's Jody Porter, the Mooney Suzuki's Sammy James Jr. and Ben Kweller.

Hammond, who handles most of the singing himself, is backed on the album by bassist Josh Lattanzi and drummer Matt Romano. Gentles said some live shows are a possibility in the United Kingdom.

As for the Strokes, the group is now touring Australia, after which it will play two shows in Mexico City. A fall North American trek, including five previously announced shows with Tom Petty, will run through October 17.

The band remains on the road in support of its third RCA Records album, First Impressions of Earth, which has sold just 262,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Despite those numbers, the Strokes continue to sell out venues worldwide.

"Our record sales get to their lowest point and our ticket sales get to their highest point," Gentles said with a laugh.

That's classic. Can't say I disagree!

I can't think of anything more musically unnecessary that a solo album from a member of the Strokes. They won't release it in the US because they're afraid (and rightfully so) that it won't sell diddly. I feel sorry for the handful of hipsters that will inevitably shell-out 20 bucks for the import.

Why would a comeback from one of the most-talked about rock acts of the 2000s arrive just after the holidays, when the music industry is usually still hibernating (or hung over)? Optimistically, they could be taking advantage of holiday money and gift certificates burning holes in the pockets of their fan base. Less charitably, they may be...
