Eighties rockers to perform virtually on alternate Internet reality; band member wants Web-based island to become a "fully functional, futuristic utopia."

Aging rockers Duran Duran may have found a way to live forever...sort of. The band has agreed to set up shop to perform concerts in a venue that anyone can get to, provided they have a PC.

Duran Duran, well-known for '80s hits "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" as well as the 1993 ballad "Ordinary World," is reinventing itself once again on Linden Lab's PC game Second Life, according to the BBC. The British group will create a "virtual island" in the life sim and perform live concerts virtually.

In Second Life, "players" are represented as avatars and can interact with each other, create houses, or, in Duran Duran's case, perform concerts, in a virtual reality. The band's avatars have already been commissioned and may be performing as soon as next month.

Keyboardist Nick Rhodes told the BBC, "When the video revolution began we instantly saw the opportunity to experiment and explore a new form of expression to enhance the musical experience. Second Life is the future right now, offering endless possibilities for artists." He also pitched the band's fans on helping Duran Duran make its island a "fully functional, futuristic utopia."

Duran Duran wouldn't be the first musicians to perform on Second Life. Suzanne Vega performed and chatted with John Hockenberry this past Friday on the program The Infinite Mind, which is broadcast through Second Life, and the BBC has hosted virtual representations of various music festivals in the game.

Duran Duran in Second Life. . . and interesting turn of events. It was inevitable that aging rockers would be the first to transition to the timeless state of an online world.

Besides Suzanne Vega and BBC's festivals there is also a very active live music community in Second Life, with a wide range of artists from all over the world performing every night.

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that the band's pop-funk -- described by the group as the Sex Pistols meets Chic --...
