Trip-hop stalwarts diss Danger Mouse then retract the rip, with founding member Geoff Barrow saying he's "a grumpy old f**k who hates everything and Gnarls Barkley."

One of the pioneers of the trip-hop movement is no fan of Gnarls Barkley.

Not so Not so "Smiley Faces."

Geoff Barrow, a founding member of Portishead, posted a rant on his band's MySpace page earlier this week about the slow pace of recording the band's third studio album. In the post, he responded to calls to have Gnarls producer Danger Mouse produce the new record.

He did so in a rather direct manner.

"I'd rather poo in my mum's Sunday roast than have Danger Mouse produce a Portishead record. No offense," Barrow wrote.

Two days later, Barrow retracted those comments, but not without another slightly more veiled jab: "Just to let you know after my rants the other day that were reported about a certain producer," Barrow wrote. "I don't rate myself better or above anyone else. It was purely a response to a message that suggested he should produce our album. And to be honest I'm a grumpy old f**k who hates everything and [G]narls Barkley, cheers."

Other than his distaste for the "Crazy" duo, Barrow had plenty to say about the plodding pace of recording for Portishead's first studio album in 12 years and first release of any kind in eight years. Their last release was 1998's Roseland NYC Live.

"Work ain't good at the moment," Barrow wrote. "We've got stuck. Just a few more months and we can really go at it. Working everyday on this f**ker. It's really hard not to sound like you're doing a bad impression of yourself. We should become a boy band...2 blokes and [Portishead singer] Beth [Gibbons], like Steps. Only a few more to go...stay on target...stay on target."

Barrow had announced in June that the album was coming together for the first time in ages, exciting many fans who have waited for years for more of the band's signature moody, orchestral electronica spiced with Gibbons' spine-tingling vocals.

Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. The group wasn't...

The Gnarls Barkley collaboration didn't bring producer Danger Mouse to the top of the British charts for the first time, but it did mark his debut as the pilot of a hit record.
