Preliminary roster for NYC music industry fest includes buzz bands like The Knife and Hot Chip, blues rockers the Black Keys, beat guru Madlib, and the original riot girls, the Slits.

The CMJ Music Marathon unveiled a preliminary lineup of this year's performers, packing it with both buzz bands ready to break out and seasoned vets looking for some extra shine.

Hot Chip Hot Chip

The event, which kicks off on Halloween in New York City, will include performances by Mercury Prize-nominated Hot Chip, Swedish buzz band The Knife, Ohio blues duo The Black Keys, Adult Swim favorite Madlib, and avant rockers Deerhoof. The event will have no shortage of vets, including all-girl punk rock group The Slits, performing one of their first shows in 25 years, as well as Suzanne Vega and hip-hopper Percee P.

CMJ has been showcasing new music since 1981. This year's festival takes place October 31 to November 4. More performers, as well as panels and related events, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Hot Chip Hot Chip

Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats,...

The Black Keys The Black Keys

The two-man duo comprising the Black Keys, singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, were in their early twenties when their debut, The Big Come Up, was issued in 2002. From Akron, OH, they play close-to-the-bone, raw blues-rock, the only instrumentation being Auerbach's guitar, Carney's drums, and the occasional organ. Auerbach...

Madlib Madlib

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft...

The Slits The Slits

Along with the Raincoats and Liliput, the Slits are one of the most significant female punk rock bands of the late '70s. Not only did they bravely (or foolishly, you be the judge) leap into the fray with little, if any, musical ability (on their debut tour with the Clash, Mick Jones used to tune their guitars for them), but through sheer emotion...

Deerhoof Deerhoof

By turns cuddly and chaotic, San Francisco's Deerhoof mixes noise, sugary melodies, and an experimental spirit into sweetly challenging and utterly distinctive music. The group began as the brainchild of guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer/keyboardist Greg Saunier in 1994; early releases, such as 1995's 7"s Return of the Woods M'Lady and For Those of...

Suzanne Vega Suzanne Vega

Suzanne Vega was the first major figure in the bumper crop of female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence during the late '80s and '90s. Her hushed, restrained folk-pop and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark...

Hot Chip
Keeping their hot streak of spotting quality artists when they hear them, the good folks at DFA welcomed to their already diverse and talented roster Hot Chip. The "Over and Over" teaser single featured the band in rocking fashion, complete with DFA signature production and a chorus courtesy of Alexis Taylor that sounds hauntingly similar to...

Madlib "Shades of Blue"
Madlib
Madlib received a rare opportunity with unfettered access to the storied Blue Note archives and permission to use them as he wished for a remix/interpretation album released on Blue Note itself. The result, Shades of Blue, is really more of a Yesterdays New Quintet album, but Madlib's name is far more recognizable then his alter ego and...
The Slits "Return of the Giant Slits"
The Slits
Never released in America, the Slits' second and final record found them pushing the envelope rhythmically. Although designed to be more commercial than Cut, it's actually less so, sounding more like the innovative work a young Adrian Sherwood was doing with Creation Rebel. Fans of the early Slits, who were put off by the reggae of Cut, were no...
Deerhoof "The Runners Four"
Deerhoof
After seven albums' worth of gleeful pandemonium, Deerhoof calm things down a bit with The Runners Four, a collection of songs that are even more restrained than Milk Man and the Green Cosmos EP. Perhaps trying for the unpredictability of their earlier work got too, well, predictable for the band. Even though the manic intensity that...
Suzanne Vega "Songs In Red and Gray"
Suzanne Vega
In musical terms, it is less significant that Mitchell Froom is no longer Suzanne Vega's husband than it is that he is no longer her producer. Although Froom's experimental style helped the singer/songwriter fulfill her desire to expand beyond her folk-pop roots on her fourth and fifth albums, 99 F° and Nine Objects of Desire, his approach...
