Rihanna, All-American Rejects, Chamillionaire, Cartel, and New Found Glory will play a free concert in New York's Battery Park on August 29.

Not content with the preshow and red carpet arrivals, MTV is extending the buildup for the 2006 Video Music Awards to two days prior for a pair of concerts featuring some of the biggest young names in music.

All-American Rejects All-American Rejects

On August 29, MTV will hold a free concert in New York City's Battery Park, with a second show the next day at Webster Hall benefiting the AIDS prevention non-profit LIFEbeat.

The Battery Park event will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature performances from Caribbean R&B star Rihanna, emo upstarts All-American Rejects and Cartel, Houston rapper Chamillionaire, and pop-punk outfit New Found Glory. Free tickets will be available at the two Tower Records locations on Broadway in Manhattan and at the MTV Store.

On August 30, MTV is sponsoring a concert that is independent of the awards show, with performances by the Jared Leto-fronted 30 Seconds to Mars and Taking Back Sunday at New York's Webster Hall. Tickets are $40 and go on sale today through Ticketweb.

As previously reported, the VMAs will be broadcast from Radio City Music Hall in New York August 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Madonna, and Panic! At the Disco lead the list of nominees, and Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Panic! At The Disco, the Killers, T.I., and Ludacris are all set to perform.

Rihanna Rihanna

Since the turn of the century, every American summer has seemed to produce one or two Caribbean-styled dance-pop hit sensations, and the summer of 2005 was no different, as the relentless dancehall-lite booming rhythms of Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" seemed as omnipresent as sunshine. Like Daddy Yankee ("Gasolina") and Sean Paul ("Get Busy") in...

The All-American Rejects The All-American Rejects

Tyson Ritter (vocals/bass) and Nick Wheeler (guitar/programming) were in junior high school when music started to influence them. Both were stuck in the ho-hum life of small-town America. Stillwater, OK, wasn't exactly the most exciting place in the world, so naturally the boys turned to music. While Ritter was staying up late, watching music...

Chamillionaire Chamillionaire

Dubbed "the Mixtape Messiah," Houston's Chamillionaire arrived late as a major-label artist during his city's 2005 takeover of mainstream rap -- the Top Ten Sound of Revenge, released during November that year, followed albums from Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and former Color Changin' Click partner Paul Wall -- but he had already built a loyal...

New Found Glory New Found Glory

Coral Springs, FL, punk-pop band A New Found Glory formed in the summer of 1997, comprising vocalist Jordan Pundik, guitarists Chad Gilbert (ex-Shai Hulud vocalist) and Steve Klein, bassist Ian Grushka, and drummer Joe Moreno. Longtime drummer Cyrus Bolooki replaced Moreno following their initial EP's release. Renowned for their energetic live...

Initially known as an actor (most notably on the '90s TV drama My So-Called Life and in movies like Requiem for a Dream), Jared Leto also had musical ambitions. His band, 30 Seconds to Mars, debuted in 2002 with a self-titled effort featuring a post-grunge sound suggestive of groups like Chevelle or Incubus. 30 Seconds returned three years later...

Taking Back Sunday Taking Back Sunday

Formed in 1999, Amityville, NY's Taking Back Sunday took their version of melodic hardcore from bands like Lifetime, Endpoint, and Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as guitarist Ed Reyes' emo band the Movielife. The band's first demo, a five-song CD, was released in February of 2001. After a year of self-promotion and touring, including shows with...

The All-American Rejects
The All-American Rejects' effervescent 2003 hit "Swing Swing" sounded like a pop-punk adaptation of Better Than Ezra, and their sophomore effort makes this mix even more apparent. The earnest racket of an outfit like the Get Up Kids is a component in Move Along's sound. But the Rejects blend and sculpt that with keyboards, choirs, pianos --...

One has to hand it to Taking Back Sunday. Three albums in, they are now pretty much experts at re-creating their own sound, so much so that they can essentially make the same album repeatedly -- but you know, different -- yet still manage to rock hard enough underneath verbose lyrics that even those who notice the unabashed similarities to past...
