Gamemaker rounds up tracks from Gnarls Barkley, Black Eyed Peas with Sergio Mendes, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, and Rhymefest, among others.

The NBA has long since gone global, with international players among the league's elite and the US national team no longer the favorites in global competition.

So as Electronic Arts unveils the soundtrack for NBA Live 07 today, it's fitting that its soundtrack goes global as well. Mixed in with EA faves like Lupe Fiasco and Jurassic 5 and 2006 breakouts like Gnarls Barkley and Rhymefest are Finnish rapper Redrama, Canadian beatmaker Ghislain Poirier, and Brazilian hip-hop outfit Braza.

"Our goal was to further define the global cultural phenomenon of hip-hop--and help shape its future--via one of the hottest sports video game franchises on the street today," EA's worldwide executive of music and marketing Steve Schnur said.

And because the game has "'07" in the title, the soundtrack had to include artists that EA feels will be the face of hip-hop's future, Schnur said. That includes artists like Kanye West protégé's Rhymefest and Lupe Fiasco along with Lady Sovereign, the pint-sized British rapper whose long-delayed Def Jam debut is set to hit stores later this year.

Lupe and Rhymefest also grace the soundtrack of EA rival 2K Sports' NBA 2K7, which was produced by Dan the Automator.

"With NBA Live 07, we knew we wanted the soundtrack to reflect the changing trends and bold innovations of hip-hop while exposing some great new international artists that we feel will be a major part of the genre's future," Schnur said. "We think we've succeeded beyond all expectations."

NBA Live 07 hits stores September 25.

The Gnarls Barkley collaboration didn't bring producer Danger Mouse to the top of the British charts for the first time, but it did mark his debut as the pilot of a hit record. Mouse, born Brian Burton, first gained the ears of discriminating listeners when he concocted The Grey Album, a bootleg that mashed the vocals from The Black Album by...

Black Eyed Peas Black Eyed Peas

Positive messages and breakdancing are integral parts of hip-hop culture, but by 1990 those elements had been temporarily eclipsed by the tough gangsta image and bleak but compelling lyrics of West Coast groups like N.W.A. However, despite sharing a zip code, Black Eyed Peas' vision goes beyond the cracked-sidewalk vignettes and sampled gunfire...

Sergio Mendes Sergio Mendes

For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group Brasil '66 regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio stations, both...

Jurassic 5 Jurassic 5

Though there's actually six of them, Jurassic 5 got everything else right on their self-titled debut EP. Part of the new rap underground of the late '90s (along with Company Flow, Mos Def, Dr. Octagon, and Sir Menelik), the sextet -- rappers Marc 7even, Chali 2na, Zaakir, and Akil, plus producers Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark -- came together in...

Talib Kweli Talib Kweli

If skills sold, Talib Kweli would have been one of the most commercially successful rappers of his time. As it was, however, the especially earnest MC became one of the most critically successful rappers of his time, which dawned in the late '90s when he rapped alongside Mos Def and DJ Hi-Tek as part of the group Black Star. This trio of...

Rhymefest Rhymefest

The Chicago, IL-based Rhymefest first gained national attention as the co-songwriter of Kanye West's Grammy-winning "Jesus Walks." His association with West actually went back several years prior; the MC's independently released Raw Dawg, issued in 2001, was produced entirely by a pre-fame West. Later signed to Mark Ronson's J-distributed Allido...

Lupe Fiasco Lupe Fiasco

Chicago-based Muslim MC Lupe Fiasco began rapping in junior high school and joined a group called Da Pak several years later. The group signed to Epic, released one single, and split up, all before Fiasco reached the age of 20. Thanks in part to the vocal support of Jay-Z, L.A. Reid signed Fiasco as a solo artist to Arista, but before anything...

Who is Gnarls Barkley, and how did he ascend to the top of the British charts with a song that brings an eerie clarity to the cloud of mental illness? It's doubtful that hip-hop fans were expecting anything good from a Black Eyed Peas remix EP circa 2006, especially coming after the deflated sellout that was 2005's Monkey Business.
