Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback lead the way with three nods each; event set for November 21 in LA.

The American Music Awards, the annual pop music event that hands out honors to the country's top-selling artists, unveiled its list of nominees today, with Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback leading the way with three nods each.

Mariah Carey Mariah Carey

Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, T.I., Rascal Flatts, Pussycat Dolls, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood claimed two noms apiece. The awards will be handed out November 21 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium during a three-hour ABC-TV special.

At a news conference this afternoon, singer Tyrese and actress Carmen Electra announced the nominees in pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip-hop, Latin, alternative, contemporary inspirational, and adult contemporary categories. It was also announced that the favorite female rap/hip-hop artist category was eliminated because fewer than five artists met the minimum eligibility requirements.

Mariah Carey Mariah Carey

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Red Hot Chili Peppers

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the...

Black Eyed Peas Black Eyed Peas

Positive messages and breakdancing are integral parts of hip-hop culture, but by 1990 those elements had been temporarily eclipsed by the tough gangsta image and bleak but compelling lyrics of West Coast groups like N.W.A. However, despite sharing a zip code, Black Eyed Peas' vision goes beyond the cracked-sidewalk vignettes and sampled gunfire...

Nickelback Nickelback

Canada's Nickelback started life as a cover band in Hanna, 215 kilometers northeast of Calgary. Eventually, they tired of playing other people's songs, and singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger put together a collection of original songs, borrowed money from his stepfather, and went to Vancouver to record the band in a friend's studio. Based on the...

Mariah Carey
The titular "Mimi" of The Emancipation of Mimi is, by all accounts, an alter ego of Mariah, a persona that captures Carey's true feelings and emotions. In case you didn't know what "emancipation" means, Mariah helpfully provides a dictionary definition of the word in the opening pages of the liner notes for her eighth proper album: it means "to...
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Stadium Arcadium"
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Indulgence has long been a way of life for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, yet they resisted the siren's call of the double album until 2006's Stadium Arcadium. Sure, 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik was as long as a classic double LP, but such distinctions mattered little in the era when vinyl gave way to CD, and they matter less now, as...
Black Eyed Peas "Renegotiations: The Remixes"
Black Eyed Peas
It's doubtful that hip-hop fans were expecting anything good from a Black Eyed Peas remix EP circa 2006, especially coming after the deflated sellout that was 2005's Monkey Business. They'd better do themselves a favor, however, and check it out, since it includes not only two of the best hip-hop tracks from the album but also, for the remixes,...
