Colombian superstar nabs six Grammy nominations, including two for "La Tortura," her duet with Alejandro Sanz.

Pop is the dominant theme amid the list of nominees for the seventh annual Latin Grammys, with Shakira leading the fray with six nods.

Shakira's sweep comes on the strength of her Spanish-language album Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1, which is up for album of the year. The single "La Tortura," a duet with Alejandro Sanz, is nominated for song and record of the year, as well. The track, which broke the record for weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, was penned by Luis Fernando Ochoa, Sanz, and Shakira.

Poetic singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona, Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati, and Mexican pop/alternative chanteusse Julieta Venegas received four nods each. Cerati's album, Ahi Vamos, will compete in the album of the year category against Shakira and Venegas' Sal y Limon.

Among the surprise nominees are Argentine singer/songwriter Leon Giecco's Por Favor, Perdon y Gracias, which is up for three awards, including album of the year, and newcomer Fonseca with his single "Te Mando Flores," which is up for record of the year.

In the best new artist category, there is one commercial success, Calle 13, and one moderate radio presence, Lena, competing alongside artists that have yet to make an impact here at all: Ceu, Ines Gaviria, and total newcomer Pamela, who records on her own label out of Peru.

The Latin Grammys will air live November 2 from New York on the Univision Network. Nominees and winners are voted upon by members of the Latin Recording Academy.

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez broke down the doors to English-language success. As the guitarist/vocalist of popular rock band Soda Stereo during the 1980s, Gustavo Cerati has continued to impress listeners as a soloist. His debut solo album Whiff, released in 1999, was marked by...

One of the most gifted and accomplished -- and certainly one of the most respected -- artists in the Latin music sphere during the late '90s and into the next century, Julieta Venegas enjoyed enormous acclaim during her run, and though commercial success took a little while to catch up with her, it eventually did with her third album, Sí. Born...

Shakira "Oral Fixation, Vol. 2"
Shakira
Shakira delights in confounding expectations, and nowhere is that better seen than in how she secured a massive crossover audience on her own terms. She blended Latin pop and American mainstream pop, on both the dance and easy listening sides of the equation, on her 2001 breakthrough, Laundry Service, but it was no crass cash grab -- she eased...
Alejandro Sanz "No Es lo Mismo - EDICIÓN ESPECIAL GIRA - 2"
Alejandro Sanz
From the album title (No Es lo Mismo means "it's not the same"), Alejandro Sanz is showing what this effort is all about. At first, something that was already known: he is not the same as any other Latin heartthrob like Chayanne, Emmanuel, or even Ricky Martin. He composes and produces his own material and, although not a great singer, he's a...
Gustavo Cerati "Ahi Vamos"
Gustavo Cerati
At long last, Gustavo Cerati returned to straightforward guitar rock on Ahi Vamos, following an extended run of fairly experimental albums that interwove electronic and orchestral flourishes into the fabric of the Argentine rock legend's guitar-driven style. If you've followed Cerati's erratic solo career, not to mention his latter-day efforts...

Julieta Venegas
A couple years removed from her mainstream breakthrough album, Sí, and its string of perfect pop hits, Julieta Venegas returned with an unsurprisingly similar album, Limón y Sal. It's difficult to fault her for doing so. Certainly, her earlier rock en español work -- Aquí (1998) and Bueninvento (2000) -- was critically acclaimed and remains well...
