Festival tour of Australia and New Zealand lineup also boasts Muse, Jet, My Chemical Romance, Violent Femmes, Peaches, and Spank Rock.

The 2007 Big Day Out festival tour unveiled its preliminary lineup today, and it leans heavily on rock from several corners of the globe, from US acts like Tool, the Killers, and My Chemical Romance, to the UK's Muse and Australia's Jet.

The six-date tour of Australia and New Zealand in January and February will be Tool's first Australian jaunt since 2002, when frontman James Maynard Keenan performed behind an illuminated screen. Vegas rocker the Killers are touring in support of their new album, Sam's Town, which hit stores this week, while My Chemical Romance's forthcoming emo concept album, The Black Parade, comes out October 23.

Jet, which debuted at Big Day Out three years ago on a side stage, has since gone on to sell more than 2.5 million copies of its debut album, Get Born. The band's sophomore album, Shine On, hits stores this week.

UK alt-rock group Muse's recent album Black Holes and Revelations went to No. 1 in Australia, Britain, and across Europe earlier this year.

That quintet of heavyweights will be joined by the Violent Femmes, Peaches, the Sleepy Jackson, Evermore, Eskimo Joe, Scribe, Spank Rock, the Herd, and the Spazzys. Tickets go on sale October 13, with additional acts being announced in the coming months.

Last year's Big Day Out festival featured performances from the Mars Volta, Franz Ferdinand, the White Stripes, Iggy and the Stooges, Sleater-Kinney, Common, M.I.A., and Kings of Leon.

The Big Day Out tour dates:

1/19: Auckland (MT Smart Stadium)

1/21: Gold Coast, Australia (Parklands)

1/25: Sydney (Showgrounds)

1/28: Melbourne (Princes Park South)

2/2: Adelaide (Royal Showground)

2/4: Perth (Claremont Showground)

Apart from TOOL, when are we gonna get some TOTALLY AWSOME AND ORIGINAL, FRESH SOUNDING ACTS to play the Big Day Out. Us aussies tend to think that we enjoy listen to good bands but I'm sorry, All the bands (except TOOL) that are in this years line up are TOTALLY BORING AND PATHETIC. Why anyone would spend so much money to watch painfully annoying bands and acts is beyond me. Sorry Squasher but I can't take the stupid bands anymore. None of them is pushing any form of musical boundries that can make a band interesting AND appealing to both eyes and ears. I'm sick and tired of bands who look like they just got out of bed and worse off, they sound ike they are playing while they are still sleeping. JET, ESKIMO JOE, EVERMORE, LITTLE BIRDY, SOMETHING FOR KATE, YOU AM I, the list goes on. I mean holy **** Talk about boring and not cutting edge. My grandpa would probably, PROBABLY, might just like these and some of the bands on a sleepy Sunday arvo. BRING BACK SOME ENERGY AND ORIGINALITY BACK TO THE BIG DAY OUT PLEEEEEZE!

Tool Tool

Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock. Or maybe it was introducing the self-absorbed pretension of art rock to the wearing grind of post-thrash metal -- the order really doesn't matter. Though Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were...

The Killers The Killers

Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), and Ronnie Vannucci (drums) took the fashionista pop world by storm in summer 2004 with "Somebody Told Me." The perfectly stylish song pulls from the band's influences -- the Smiths, New Order, Oasis, and the Cure -- and it was just enough to get them on MTV. Part...

Muse Muse

The English rock trio Muse consists of guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard. Bored by the sleepy life provided by their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon, the three friends began playing music together. They started the first incarnation of their band when they were all 13, changing the name of...

Jet Jet

The Australian garage rock band Jet is comprised of Cameron Muncey (guitar/vocals), brothers Chris Cester (drums) and Nic Cester (guitar), and Mark Wilson (bass). Hailing from Melbourne and with dreams of making it big, the foursome formed just as the new millennium was beginning. They quickly self-released the Dirty Sweet EP in 2002. The...

My Chemical Romance My Chemical Romance

Based in New Jersey, My Chemical Romance is an alternative pop/rock and punk-pop band that has been compared to Thursday and, to a lesser degree, Cursive. Their name was inspired by author Irvine Welsh (of Trainspotting fame), and while many of their songs are loud, fast, hyper, and aggressive, My Chemical Romance's work also tends to be melodic...

Violent Femmes Violent Femmes

The textbook American cult band of the 1980s, the Violent Femmes captured the essence of teen angst with remarkable precision; raw and jittery, the trio's music found little commercial success but nonetheless emerged as the soundtrack for the lives of troubled adolescents the world over. The group formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the early...

Peaches Peaches

Peaches (Merrill Nisker) burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cock-sure rapping and spurting groovebox beats. Indeed, this vulgar Canadian temptress may have come from an underground womb of acoustic folk (Mermaid Café), avant jazz (Fancypants Hoodlum), and deconstructed noise swarms (the Shit), but it wasn't until...

Spank Rock Spank Rock

Reflecting the party rap atmosphere of Baltimore's club scene, Spank Rock arrived as one of the best things to happen to both underground hip-hop and dirty rap, a pair of styles that rarely intermingle. The group formed as a collaboration between MC Naeem Juwan (aka Spank Rock) and producer XXXchange (Alex Epton). Both grew up in Baltimore,...

In an age where major labels dictate that new releases from bands appear on record store shelves every 18 months or so, rare is the artist given freedom and ability to reflect and stretch out to explore creative evolution and release music as an artist, rather than the prepackaged predictability of an entertainer. Naysayers listen up. Teignmouth, England's Muse refuse to be your "next" Radiohead. Since forming in 1997, this alternative rock trio has continuously battled comparisons to the famed Oxford group while ambitiously creating a sound of their own. The Violent Femmes' first album of new material to be released in the U.S. since 1994's muddled New Times (not counting the 1995 Australian release Rock!!!!!, reissued stateside in 1998), Freak Magnet is a pleasant surprise in its focus and consistency, marking yet another return to the group's folk-punk roots -- the punk side of the equation in...
Peaches "Impeach My Bush"
Peaches
On Peaches' last album, the intermittently tired- and inspired-sounding Fatherfucker, she sounded almost weary of singing about sex -- a pretty dangerous place for her to be, considering that it's her main source of inspiration. Fortunately, though, Impeach My Bush shakes that not-so-fresh feeling. Even though the album's sound sticks to the...
