Social networking giant will hold concerts from TV on the Radio, Alice in Chains, Ziggy Marley, and others to benefit relief efforts in Sudan and Chad.

MySpace said today that it plans to hold 20 concerts on a single day throughout the US to raise awareness and money for humanitarian relief in Sudan.

The social networking giant said the October 21 concerts will include performances from the likes of TV on the Radio, Alice in Chains, Ziggy Marley, Citizen Cope, Gov't Mule, and Insane Clown Posse, with a portion of ticket proceeds going to Oxfam's relief efforts in Sudan and neighboring Chad.

"The crisis in Darfur is a global concern, and as a global community we have a responsibility to take action," MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe said in a statement. "MySpace's reach gives us an extraordinary opportunity to spread the word and empower individuals to help address the horrors in Darfur."

Three years of fighting between the Sudanese government and rebel groups have killed at least 200,000 people in western Sudan, while another 2.5 million people have been displaced in that time.

The concerts include TV on the Radio in Philadelphia; Alice in Chains in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Ziggy Marley in Medford, Oregon; Citizen Cope in Seattle; Gov't Mule and Donavon Frankenreiter in Spokane, Washington; and Insane Clown Posse in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Other concerts will take place in Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco, California; Melbourne, Florida; Atlanta; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Paul, Minnesota; Reno, Nevada; Baltimore; Asheville, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Milwaukee; and Washington, D.C.

The campaign also includes a public service announcement featuring Samuel L. Jackson. Besides MySpace, it will appear on television and in movie theaters before films released by 20th Century Fox, which, like MySpace, is owned by News Corp.

TV on the Radio TV on the Radio

The Brooklyn-based group TV on the Radio mixes post-punk, electronic and other atmoshperic elements in such a creative way that it only makes sense that its core duo, vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and multi-instrumentalist/producer David Andrew Sitek, are both visual artists as well as musicians. Adebimpe is a graduate of NYU's film school and...

Alice in Chains Alice in Chains

In many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early '90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers. They were hard enough for metal fans, yet...

Ziggy Marley Ziggy Marley

The oldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and his wife Rita, Ziggy Marley was the natural heir to the throne left vacant by his father's untimely 1981 death; along with backing band the Melody Makers, a unit comprised of his brothers and sisters, he successfully carried on the tradition of communicating the music's message to a growing global...

Citizen Cope is both a person (Clarence Greenwood) and a band. Born in Memphis, Greenwood is obviously the leader of the group, as he plays the keyboard, guitar, sings, and acts as a DJ, songwriter, and producer. Greenwood first broke into the music biz by appearing on albums by Maryland rapper Basehead (1993's Not in Kansas Anymore and 1996's...

Gov\'t Mule Gov't Mule

The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass....

Insane Clown Posse Insane Clown Posse

Insane Clown Posse are a cartoonish metal/rap band with a vaunted live show that featured open fires, chainsaws, liters of soda dousing the audience (Faygo being the group's favorite brand), and more emphasis on performance art than the performance of music. In the world of the late '90s, that was more than enough to get them a recording...

Jamie Cullum Jamie Cullum

British pianist/vocalist Jamie Cullum mixes jazz with melodic pop and rock into a crossover style that calls to mind such artists as Harry Connick, Jr. and Norah Jones. In that vein, Cullum will just as often cover a swinging jazz standard as a modern rock song, and his original compositions deftly move from earnest ballads to songs of sardonic...

The Fray The Fray

Denver-based band the Fray was formed in 2002 by Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) when the two former school friends met up again in a local music store. A founding member of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir's musical legacy (separate from its cultural implications) will be of an utterly strange rhythm guitar player and songwriter who grew up in one of the most lasting outside bands of the 1960s. There are a number of artists -- Everlast, G. Love, Mat Kearney -- who, while staying firmly within blues and rock, bring in hip-hop tendencies, with varying degrees of success. Let's get this out of the way: Warren Haynes is a great guitar player. High & Mighty is the second release to feature Danny Louis and...
