Star-studded compilation includes covers by My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Gomez, Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic, and Bruce Hornsby.

Loads of bands have cited the Band as an influence over the years, and now many of them are getting a chance to prove it on a new star-studded tribute compilation, for which the track listing was unveiled today.

The Band, 1969. The Band, 1969.

The album, dubbed Endless Highway: The Music of the Band, will hit stores January 30 on 429 Records a subsidiary of the Savoy Label Group.

It will be led by My Morning Jacket's cover of "It Makes No Difference," recorded at Band drummer Levon Helm's home studio in Woodstock, N.Y.

The compilation also features a cover of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by the Allman Brothers Band, Death Cab For Cutie's "Rocking Chair," Jack Johnson's "I Shall Be Released," Gov't Mule's "The Shape I'm In," and Gomez's "Up on Cripple Creek."

"Picking a song from their catalog was like looking at your group of close friends and deciding which one is 'the closest,'" My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan told Billboard.com. "You find that they're all 'the closest' in their own relative way. We hold that song in the utmost reverence. It's not only one of the saddest love songs ever written, but more importantly highlights the beauty of Rick Danko. His delivery on that song is one of the first reasons I fell in love with the Band in the first place."

The Band The Band

For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their...

My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket is a four-piece band from Louisville, KY, built solidly around the vocal and songwriting talent of group leader Jim James. Their sound is lonesome, haunting, almost classic country at times, and that voice -- Jim James' voice shares the same section of that old country highway with the familiar sounds of Neil Young, yet sounds...

Bellingham, WA, indie pop quartet Death Cab for Cutie began in 1997 as the solo project of singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, who previously recorded under the name All-Time Quarterback. The British band Gomez is a five-piece, consisting of Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitar), Tom Gray (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul Blackburn (bass, guitar), Olly Peacock (drums), and Ian Ball (vocals, guitar, harmonica). The Allman Brothers Band The Allman Brothers Band

The story of the Allman Brothers Band is one of triumph, tragedy, redemption, dissolution, and a new redemption. Over nearly 30 years, they've gone from being America's single most influential band to a has-been group trading on past glories, to reach the 21st century as one of the most respected rock acts of their era.

For the first...

The Band
Jubilation, the tenth studio album by the Band, showcases a group that has aged better than the finest port wine. In 2004, a dreamy cover of "Rocket Man" concluded My Morning Jacket's first volume of rarities. Which was prescient, because it's Elton John that Jim James' songs for 2005's Z first bring to mind.
