Apple makes a red version of its new iPod Nano for U2 frontman's latest humanitarian effort.

Bono has made the new iPod Nano red in the face.

Apple has produced a red version of its new iPod Nano, joining a host of companies participating in the U2 frontman's new (Product) Red campaign, whereby portions of proceeds from sales of selected merchandise go to the Global Fund, an organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

The red Nano hit stores today and will be complemented by a red $25 iTunes gift card next month. Apple will contribute $10 from the sale of each new red-colored $199 iPod nano to the Global Fund.

Gap, Motorola, Converse, Armani, and MTV Networks are also on board. Bono and Oprah Winfrey shopped along Chicago's "Miracle Mile" to promote the crusade today.

"It's wonderful to see this incredible level of commitment from companies that are willing to lend their creativity in the fight against AIDS in Africa, the greatest health crisis in 600 years," Bono said in a statement. "AIDS in Africa is an emergency, that's why we chose the color red. When you buy a (Product) Red product, the company gives money to buy pills that will keep someone in Africa alive."

So far, the (Product) Red initiative, which began this spring in Britain, has raised more than $12 million for African AIDS programs, the effort's spokesman Doug Piwinski told the Associated Press.

I really hate Bono. Unless he actually buys the food/medicine himself, and then proceeds to fly over and hand it out (which he doesn't). That crap doesn't even make it to benefit people. Why? Because the government (theirs not ours) steals it, and then sells the stuff in free markets. Damn Clepto-crats And yeah, that really happens. My church used to buy goats for this village (in Mozambique actually) we would help support but they kept taking our stuff once it got to port so we stopped. And wtf. And how is money going to fight aids? Are you paying people not to have sex? Because as far as I'm aware, that is pretty much the only way to guaranty that you won't F****** get it.

GOOD FOR BONO! GOOD FOR APPLE! Fight poverty, fight AIDS, Help Africa!
Oh, how your (the internet folk on mp3.com) ignorance makes me cringe. You think Bono is selling out?! He makes no profit personally from the sales. Bono has visited many regions of Africa where malaria is killing millions, and AIDS is a seemingly unstoppable death dealer.

It's great to see the plight of Africa reaching ears in America, and people are payijng attention because it comes in one of the only forms of expression Americans notice. High-end consumer products. The fact the Prduct Red is making fighting for Africa "cool" is astounding, and effective. This is just the beginning though.

You wanna whine about Red iPods? Spend a few minutes, hours or days looking up AIDS relief and support efforts in Africa. See how much your country is helping. Look into it.
