On a night that saw Shakira, Daddy Yankee, Julieta Venegas, and Panda take home awards, Robbie Williams steals the show.

The tongue is the prevailing theme for the MTV Latin America Music Awards, with winners receiving tongue-shaped awards.

But at the 2006 edition of the awards last night at the Palacio de los Deportes in southern Mexico City, the backside of Robbie Williams stole the show.

Williams, who took home the award for best international pop artist last night, mooned the crowd of around 10,000 people during his performance of his song "Rock DJ."

Alternative rock band Panda was the big winner, taking home awards for best band, best alternative artist, and newcomer of the year.

Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee won the night's big prize for artist of the year, telling Reuters afterwards that his music was no passing fad. "Reggaeton made the change in music," he said. "Reggaeton is here to stay, that's what people showed us."

Shakira Shakira

Colombian singer Shakira took home the song of the year for "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean from her second English-language album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2. Mexican singer and accordion player Julieta Venegas' six nominations turned into just a single win for best performer of the year. Mexican band Mana won video of the year and best rock artist, plus a special award to honor their two decades in the music business.

The show was hosted by members of the band Molotov and Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera, who starred in the movie Nacho Libre. The event marked MTV's return to Mexico after Hurricane Wilma ruined last year's ceremony just hours before it was to begin on a pristine Caribbean beach. This year's ceremony is the first to take place outside Miami.

"MTV finally understood that Miami is not Latin America," said presenter and actor Diego Luna.

Im glad Kudai won an award they deserve it, its a new emo/pop group that adds a new look to music in spanish.

I dont like this idea of Reggaeton being so famous, since is not good music to listen to or I dont see the nice quality in it, only dirty words and some rap mixed.

MTV should award more spain artists like Rosario Flores, Azucar Moreno, and many other Mexican, Spanish and South American artist that sing in spanish. But well MTV is well known for only showing the most famous and best sellers.... blah...

I need to see that Robbie Williams performance.

I think the comedian they had on was really bad. His jokes were not funny and were offensive. I didn't find his jokes about the US funny...not even cute. What a jerk.

Shakira Shakira

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez broke down the doors to English-language success. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a...

Daddy Yankee Daddy Yankee

As the urban regional style of Latin music heated up in the mid-2000s, spearheaded by the burgeoning reggaeton sound, Daddy Yankee above all led the charge, selling hundreds of thousands of CDs in the wake of his international breakthrough hit, "Gasolina." The reggaeton star enjoyed success not only throughout Latin America but also in the...

Julieta Venegas Julieta Venegas

One of the most gifted and accomplished -- and certainly one of the most respected -- artists in the Latin music sphere during the late '90s and into the next century, Julieta Venegas enjoyed enormous acclaim during her run, and though commercial success took a little while to catch up with her, it eventually did with her third album, Sí. Shakira delights in confounding expectations, and nowhere is that better seen than in how she secured a massive crossover audience on her own terms. She blended Latin pop and American mainstream pop, on both the dance and easy listening sides of the equation, on her 2001 breakthrough, Laundry Service, but it was no crass cash grab -- she eased...

Julieta Venegas
A couple years removed from her mainstream breakthrough album, Sí, and its string of perfect pop hits, Julieta Venegas returned with an unsurprisingly similar album, Limón y Sal. It's difficult to fault her for doing so. Certainly, her earlier rock en español work -- Aquí (1998) and Bueninvento (2000) -- was critically acclaimed and remains well...
