To promote its latest greatest-hits comp, U218 Singles, Irish rockers are giving away a trip to see them play live in Honolulu.

"Where shall we go?"

U2 U2

That's the question U2 is asking its fans in an online lyric-hunt contest to promote the band's latest greatest-hits compilation, U218 Singles.

The band has posted banners containing U2 lyrics on more than a dozen Web sites throughout the world, including MP3.com, highlighting letters within those lyrics that will eventually form the answer to the aforementioned question.

Those who get the right answer will have a chance to go somewhere themselves--to Honolulu, Hawaii, to see the final show of U2's marathon Vertigo tour at Aloha Stadium. Pearl Jam is set to open the show.

The contest kicked off this week, with each site's lyrical excerpt containing one highlighted letter that will eventually make up the answer. Contestants must submit answers to the contest before November 3.

The contest winner will be announced November 6.

U218 Singles features 16 of the band's greatest hits, along with two new tracks produced by Rick Rubin. The first is a collaboration with Green Day on a cover of the classic punk track "The Saints Are Coming" by the Slits.

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. Equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion, they were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal. Ever since the beginning of their career, U2 had a sense of purpose and played on a larger scale than their peers, so when they stumbled with the knowing rocktronica fusion of 1997's Pop -- the lone critical and commercial flop in their catalog -- it was enough to shake the perception held among fans and critics, perhaps even among the group...
