New York City music marathon boasts a who's who of the underground and plenty of big name performers, panelists--and even Borat and Oasis' Noel Gallagher.

One of the biggest music festivals of the year kicks off next week, and while it will be chock-full of both indie vets and bands ready to break out, it will also feature a would-be Kazakhstani and a surly Brit.

The CMJ Music Marathon kicks off Tuesday, with more than 1,000 bands set to perform at more than 50 venues throughout New York City. The event will also feature dozens of panels, with Chuck D, George Clinton, Moby, Janeane Garofalo, A-Trak, Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers, Hi-Tek, Steve Earle, and the Insane Clown Posse all slated to speak on panels.

The 26th annual event, which runs October 31 through November 4, will also feature a series of film events, including advance screenings of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan with a special appearance by comedian Sasha Baron Cohen in his Borat character. A more music-centric film, Oasis--Lord Don't Slow Me Down, will also get a screening, and guitarist Noel Gallagher is scheduled to make an appearance.

CMJ is traditionally all about the music, however, and the festival has tabbed a host of buzz bands, including the Decemberists, the Strokes' Albert Hammond, Jr., the Cardigans, the Black Keys, 120 Days, the Clipse, Cold War Kids, the Decemberists, Deerhoof, Dr. Dog, Freddie Foxx, Mercury Prize-nominated Hot Chip, Madlib, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Pharoahe Monche, Prince Paul and Ill Out Crew + CL Smooth w/ J. Period, Saul Williams, the Shins, Silversun Pickups, the Slits, Tapes 'n Tapes, the Watson Twins, the Knife, My Brightest Diamond, Nomo, Oxford Collapse, Shooter Jennings, Steve Earle and Alison Moorer, Suzanne Vega, and Tapes N Tapes.

I bet that is the first time Steve Earle and Insane Clown Posse have ever been mentioned in the same sentence.

Oasis Oasis

Oasis shot from obscurity to stardom in 1994, becoming one of Britain's most popular and critically acclaimed bands of the decade; along with Blur and Suede, they are responsible for returning British guitar pop to the top of the charts. Led by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher, the Manchester quintet adopts the rough, thuggish image of the...

George Clinton George Clinton

The mastermind of the Parliament/Funkadelic collective during the 1970s, George Clinton broke up both bands by 1981 and began recording solo albums, occasionally performing live with his former bandmates as the P.Funk All-Stars. Born in Kannapolis, NC, on July 22, 1940, Clinton became interested in doo wop while living in New Jersey during the...

The Decemberists The Decemberists

Colin Meloy leads the Decemberists, a five-piece outfit whose pop sound has listeners comparing the band with the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle & Sebastian. Meloy, who hails from Missoula, MT, is the main songwriter for the group. Rounding out the lineup are Ezra Holbrook on drums, Nate Query on upright bass, Jenny Conlee on accordion,...

The Strokes

Equally inspired by classic tunesmiths like Buddy Holly and John Lennon as well as the attitude and angular riffs of fellow New Yorkers Television and the Velvet Underground, the Strokes were also equally blessed and cursed with an enormous amount of hype -- particularly from the U.K. music press, whose adulation for the group rivaled their...

The Cardigans

One of the most pleasing pop groups of the '90s, the Cardigans' sugary confections would grow annoying very quickly if they weren't backed by great musicianship and clever arrangements. The band's 1995 breakout album Life reflected the Cardigans at their most saccharine -- the sunny disposition of vocalist Nina Persson being the major argument...

Hot Chip Hot Chip

Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats,...

Clipse Clipse

Hailing from Virginia, Clipse -- brothers Pusha T and Malice -- were one of the rare first artists to associate with the Neptunes. The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams first met the duo in the early '90s, was very impressed by their talents, and decided to help them get a gig. Hooking them up with the Elektra label, an early single flopped and the...

Medeski, Martin & Wood Medeski, Martin & Wood

A group that effortlessly straddles the gap between avant-garde improvisation and accessible groove-based jazz, Medeski, Martin, & Wood have simultaneously earned standings as relentlessly innovative musicians and an enormously popular act. Emerging out of the New York downtown scene in the early '90s, the group soon set out on endless...

Prince Paul Prince Paul

Beginning his career as a DJ for Stetsasonic, rapper and producer Prince Paul has lent his skills to albums by Boogie Down Productions, Gravediggaz, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, and 3rd Bass, among others. Paul's big break came when he produced De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising album. Shattering the acknowledged rules of hip-hop production, he...

Why would a comeback from one of the most-talked about rock acts of the 2000s arrive just after the holidays, when the music industry is usually still hibernating (or hung over)? Optimistically, they could be taking advantage of holiday money and gift certificates burning holes in the pockets of their fan base. Less charitably, they may be...
The Cardigans "Super Extra Gravity"
The Cardigans
The Cardigans gained the respect of listeners in the mid-'90s, not for the impossibly sunny triteness of their lyrics, but for the wonderful songs and productions that seemed to emanate from Malmo, Sweden, and the minds of the group's core trio: vocalist Nina Persson, songwriter Peter Svensson, and producer Tore Johansson. More than ten years...

Keeping their hot streak of spotting quality artists when they hear them, the good folks at DFA welcomed to their already diverse and talented roster Hot Chip. Clipse "Lord Willin'"
Clipse
Rap and drugs. The somewhat unholy marriage is now decades deep. Not surprisingly, the conjunction has produced some dynamic musical results that have been readily smoked, ingested, and snorted by the mainstream music listening public. Back in the late '80s, Ice-T was one of the first rappers to blur the lines between the rap world and the...

Medeski, Martin & Wood
Out Louder reunites keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood with guitar great John Scofield, who employed the trio on his 1997 A Go Go album. That record opened the creativity gates for both the trio and Scofield, who fed off and goaded each other into territories neither party had previously gone separately. Out...
