Anti-Bush skit angers Streisand fans--again
Barbra Streisand, an outspoken supporter of Democrats and liberal policies, has made another enemy thanks to a skit poking fun at President George W. Bush that the singer performs at her concerts. During a Streisand concert Monday in Sunrise, Florida, one disgruntled concertgoer nearly beaned the 64-year-old singer with a paper cup filled with an unidentified liquid, the singer's publicist has said.
Martin Erlichman, Streisand's manager, said the skit, which includes a look-alike George W. Bush actor, was written by a Republican and had been performed so often that fans should have expected it. "This skit has been so massively covered by [the] media, it's impossible that it still could come as a surprise to any of the Bush admirers who bought tickets," Erlichman told the Associated Press.
Monday's cup-throwing was the most violent fans have gotten during the skit, but it hasn't been the only sign of displeasure. Some fans at a Streisand concert in early October booed and heckled the singer during the skit before she exploded onstage. "Shut the f--- up! Shut up if you can't take a joke!" Streisand yelled after a heckler at her Madison Square Garden concert in New York refused to quiet down.
Classic John Lennon hat coming to London auction block
A hat that John Lennon wore during a photo shoot near the end of the Beatles' run will be auctioned off November 22 in London. The hat is expected to be worth from $15,200 to $19,000. The Beatles singer and guitarist wore it during an August 1969 photo shoot after the band recorded for the last time, according to the AP.
A variety of other memorabilia, mostly move-related, will also go under the London hammer. Items include Spider-Man posters that depicted the World Trade Center towers that were pulled in New York after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks; All Quiet on the Western Front movie posters; and pantaloons that Marilyn Monroe wore in 1954's River of No Return, which are expected to fetch $3,800 to $5,700.
"We are delighted to be selling such an important collection of TV memorabilia," Britsh auctioneers Bonhams said in a statement Tuesday. "Rarely can one have an insight into the concepts of such an iconic series."
Prince jumps into Vegas nightclub fray
R&B innovator Prince wants to step into the competitive Las Vegas scene with a nightclub of his own. The club will be located in the Rio hotel and will open sometime this month, according to Billboard.
The club's Web site, 3121.com, features a shot of the Rio hotel imposed with the Prince logo and "3121 before it morphs into a slideshow of images of Prince and other music artists, including Gnarles Barkley's Cee-Lo, Patti LaBelle, and Esthero. The Web site does not contain any other information other than its closing text: "November 2006." The Web site is registered to Paisley Park Enterprises, a company owned by Prince. The nightclub is being coordinated with Concerts West/AEG Live, which promoted Prince's 2004 Musicology tour.
Apple adds iTunes section for Latin music
Apple Computer said today it has created a dedicated section to Latin music and other media on its iTunes Music Store, called iTunes Latino. The new section emphasizes music but offers other downloads, including Telemundo TV shows, Spanish audiobooks and podcasts, and Latin artists' music videos. Apple said it will feature exclusive music videos from Latin artists Juanes, Mach & Daddy, and Luis Fonsi. Sergio Mendes, Julieta Venegas, and Alejandra Guzman are three artists who have created "celebrity playlists" customers can download.
By introducing the dedicated Latino section, Apple is simply responding to customer demand, the company said. "It's a key opportunity that we were missing," Apple iTunes vice president Eddy Cue told the Associated Press.
