Yeah Yeah Yeahs Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Discovered in the wake of the Strokes' popularity and the subsequent garage rock revival, New York's art-punk trio the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are comprised of singer Karen O, guitarist Nicolas Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. O met Chase at Ohio's Oberlin College and met Zinner through friends after she transferred to NYU. Zinner and O formed the band...

Rapture Rapture

The side project of guitarists Tomi Ullgren (Thy Serpent) and Jarno Salovaara (Shape of Despair), Finland's Rapture also features singer Petri Eskelinen, bassist Jani Ohman, drummer Samu Ruotsalainen, and keyboard player Sami Karttunen. Deriving their sound from the doleful doom/death metal style made popular by middle-era Paradise Lost,...

Feist Feist

She was born Leslie Feist in Calgary in the mid-'70s but goes by her surname when it comes to making music for a living. The Jhay-inspired songstress got her start playing in a high-school punk band called Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle of the bands contest, Placebo played...

Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand

Glasgow's art-damaged rock quartet Franz Ferdinand -- named for the Austro-Hungarian Archduke whose murder sparked World War I -- features bassist Bob Hardy, guitarist Nick McCarthy, drummer Paul Thomson, and singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos. In late 2001, Kapranos and Hardy had begun working on music together when they met McCarthy, a classically...

Kaiser Chiefs Kaiser Chiefs

When Tears for Fears sang, "Kick out the Style/Bring back the Jam," in "Sowing the Seeds of Love," one can imagine the lads in Kaiser Chiefs raising their mugs of ale in agreement. Comprised of vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick Baines, and drummer Nick Hodgson, Kaiser Chiefs resurrected the mod...

Cat Power Cat Power

Cat Power was the alias of Chan Marshall, a Southern-bred singer/songwriter whose father, Charlie, was an itinerant pianist. After dropping out of high school, Marshall found herself in New York; performing under the name Cat Power, she was booked as the opening act for Liz Phair, where she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar...

Wolfmother Wolfmother

Truly a band out of time, Australian power trio Wolfmother were conceived in 2000 -- about 30 years too late, considering that their psychedelic brand of proto-heavy metal sounds like a ringer for late-'60s/early-'70s bands such as Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Andrew Stockdale, bassist/organist Chris Ross, and...

Rapture "Songs for the Withering"
Rapture
Songs for the Withering, Rapture's second album, is no huge departure from its first one, but it's still a more-than-solid take on the whole melancholy doom-death metal sound. Comparable in various ways to Paradise Lost, Opeth, Sentenced, and (above all) Katatonia, Rapture's songs here are built up around basic mid-tempo rock drumbeats, with...

Feist
Somewhere in between living with Peaches, playing guitar with By Divine Right, rapping with Chilly Gonzales, and singing with Broken Social Scene and Apostle of Hustle, Canadian songstress Feist started a solo career. Following up 1999's self-released Monarch, Let It Die was recorded in Paris between 2002 and 2003. The romance of the City of...

Franz Ferdinand
Opting not to fix what broke them, You Could Have It So Much Better serves up more of the stylish, angular sound that worked so well on Franz Ferdinand's debut. After years of rehearsing in abandoned Glasgow warehouses and playing in relatively obscure groups like the Yummy Fur, it's perfectly understandable why the band chose not to mess with a...
Kaiser Chiefs "Employment"
Kaiser Chiefs
Inspired by that moment sometime in the late '70s when punk gave birth to new wave (and looked back to the heyday of '60s mod for inspiration), the Kaiser Chiefs' debut, Employment, expands on the sharp, sussed sound of their singles in surprising ways. A look at London life and its discontents, Employment is a remarkably ambitious debut album...

Wolfmother "Wolfmother"
Wolfmother
There's no denying Australian heavy rock trio Wolfmother has been raised on rock -- specifically, raised on '70s rock. Problem is, from all appearances on their eponymous debut, they made their journey into the past via the twin gateway drugs of the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age, and once they dug back to the original Zeppelin and...
