CD/DVD package from Hasidic reggae rapper includes covers of the Police's "Message in a Bottle" and live performance in Tel Aviv.

Hasidic reggae rapper Matisyahu will offer fans a holiday treat with the CD/DVD set No Place to Be, due December 26 via Epic.

The CD sports seven tracks, among them two versions of the Police's "Message in a Bottle"--a studio version recorded with the legendary Sly & Robbie and a dub version produced by Bill Laswell.

Also featured are the Laswell-produced studio cuts "Chop 'Em Down" and "Warrior," the Sly & Robbie-helmed single "Jerusalem (Out of Darkness Comes Light)," and alternate mixes of the latter cut plus "Youth."

A video for "Jerusalem" was recently crafted by Motion Theory, the company behind Beck's "Girl" and the Jay-Z/Pharrell Williams commercials for Hewlett Packard.

The DVD chronicles a Matisyahu concert in Tel Aviv, Israel, in December 2005, enriched with spontaneous performances on the streets of Jerusalem and interviews.

Matisyahu is expected to tour extensively in 2007, but for now, the only shows on his schedule are a December 13 gig in Washington, DC, and Hanukkah run in his New York homebase on December 16 to 17 and 19 at Hammerstein Ballroom.

When Matisyahu emerged with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, in 2004, his musical persona seemed to some a novelty. A longtime linchpin of the New York City underground music scene, Bill Laswell was among the most prolific artists in contemporary music; as a performer, producer, and label chief, his imprint is on literally hundreds of albums, the majority of them characterized by a signature sound fusing the energy of punk with the bone-rattling rhythms of...

Theirs is the ultimate musical marriage, a partnership that, once formed, re-etched the very landscape of not just Jamaican music, but the entire world's. Such hyperbole is oftentimes rolled out by publicity machines whenever two musical talents come together, but in the case of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare, it really was an...

The Police The Police

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense,...

Concurrent with his second studio album, Youth, Matisyahu released an intriguing collection of dub versions of his works, along with a few entirely new pieces. The Police
Although the Police's fifth release, 1983's Synchronicity, would be their most commercially successful and lead to a sold-out tour of enormodomes (including New York's Shea Stadium), it would turn out to be the trio's final album and tour. Like all Police recordings, Synchronicity contains some obvious "filler" (such as the silly dinosaur tale...
