Pomp rockers' Greatest Hits is certified as Britain's top-selling album ever, besting The Beatles and Oasis.

It's made nary a music critic's all-time best list over the years, but Queen's Greatest Hits is tops at UK cash registers.

The Official UK Charts Company said today that Queen's Greatest Hits had sold more than 5.4 million copies in Britain since its release in 1981, more than any other record.

Sales of the hits package, which includes classics like "We Will Rock You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," have outpaced that of two of the UK's most lauded albums, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. Sgt. Pepper's has sold 4.8 million copies to date, while What's the Story has sold 4.3 million.

Queen's follow-up Greatest Hits II is the seventh best-selling album in Britain, according to the list. Queen and Michael Jackson (Thriller and Bad) are the only two artists to have two albums in the top 10. Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, Abba's Gold, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and Madonna's The Immaculate Collection rounded out the top 10.

Robbie Williams appeared most among the top 100, landing six albums on the list.

Queen Queen

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible...

The Beatles The Beatles

So much has been said and written about the Beatles -- and their story is so mythic in its sweep -- that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced...

Oasis Oasis

Oasis shot from obscurity to stardom in 1994, becoming one of Britain's most popular and critically acclaimed bands of the decade; along with Blur and Suede, they are responsible for returning British guitar pop to the top of the charts. Led by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher, the Manchester quintet adopts the rough, thuggish image of the...

Michael Jackson Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was unquestionably the biggest pop star of the '80s, and certainly one of the most popular recording artists of all time. In his prime, Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility,...

ABBA ABBA

The most commercially successful pop group of the 1970s, the origins of the Swedish superstars ABBA dated back to 1966, when keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson, a onetime member of the popular beat outfit the Hep Stars, first teamed with guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Ulvaeus, the leader of the folk-rock unit the Hootenanny Singers. The two...

Madonna Madonna

After a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle...

Pink Floyd Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality, in...

Dire Straits Dire Straits

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the...

The Beatles
The only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews, there are few other rock records as controversial as Let It Be. First off, several facts need to be explained: although released in May 1970, this was not their final album, but largely recorded in early 1969, way before Abbey Road. Phil Spector was enlisted in early 1970...

It took Mark Knopfler more than six years to craft a followup to Dire Straits' international chart-topper, Brothers In Arms, but though On Every Street sold in the expected multi-millions worldwide on the back of the band's renown and a year-long tour, it was a disappointment.
