Rockers are joined by Aussie acts Jet, Paul Kelly, Eskimo Joe, Evermore, and the John Butler Trio at Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne.

U2's Bono and the Edge teamed with Pearl Jam to join Aussie acts Jet, Paul Kelly, Eskimo Joe, Evermore, and the John Butler Trio at a Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne tonight (November 17). The event drew 14,000 to the Myer Music Bowl and was broadcast to thousands more on giant screens through Melbourne, Brisbane, and two major Victorian regional towns Geelong and Bendigo.

The concert was held on the eve of the two-day G20 summit. Political leaders and finance officials from 19 countries, the European Bank, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund will meet at the Hyatt Hotel to discuss global and domestic issues.

"Politicians all have to do what you tell them to do: Scream it from the mountains," Bono called out, before he and Edge joined Pearl Jam for a thunderous cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," which featured new lyrics written for the occasion.

Bono had been pushing to for discussions with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who declined. The U2 singer later criticized the Prime Minister on national state-owned channel ABC's current affairs program Lateline, saying he needed to display leadership on the poverty issue.

"What kind of Australia do you want to live in? You've got this incredible prosperity, I have been coming here for 20 years and I am in awe of what you have done," he said. "[The PM] has also led your country to the bottom of the league table in terms of engagement with the world's poor and I don't think that's an Australia people want to live in."

Vedder lambasted Howard four days earlier during a Pearl Jam gig in Melbourne.

Police have barricaded most streets in Melbourne, expecting violent protests and demonstrations.

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. Equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion, they were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal. The Edge provided...

Pearl Jam Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums....

Aussie rockers Eskimo Joe formed in Fremantle in 1997. Ever since the beginning of their career, U2 had a sense of purpose and played on a larger scale than their peers, so when they stumbled with the knowing rocktronica fusion of 1997's Pop -- the lone critical and commercial flop in their catalog -- it was enough to shake the perception held among fans and critics, perhaps even among the group...

Pearl Jam
Nearly 15 years after Ten, Pearl Jam finally returned to the strengths of their debut with 2006's Pearl Jam, a sharply focused set of impassioned hard rock. Gone are the arty detours (some call them affectations) that alternately cluttered and enhanced their albums from 1993's sophomore effort, Vs., all the way to 2002's Riot Act, and what's...

The John Butler Trio's U.S. debut album, Sunrise Over Sea, is phenomenal -- from the opening notes of "Treat Yo Mama," a muscular and soulfully expressive roots rocker, to the final strains of the expansive, ten-minute-long opus "Sometimes." The John Butler Trio is arguably the best musical group Australia has to offer in 2005, and Butler's...
