Canadian group will write and record a song about the person who downloads the 100 millionth song on the indie-centric subscription service.
The Barenaked Ladies' next song could be about you.
The Canadian pop group has signed on to a unique promotion with indie music subscription service eMusic, agreeing to write and record a song about the person who downloads the 100 millionth song on the site in the coming days. eMusic will also give the lucky downloader a free premium subscription for life and a chance to feature in an advertising campaign for the service.
eMusic CEO David Pakman called surpassing 100 million downloads a defining moment for both eMusic and the digital music space overall. eMusic sells music in the MP3 format, which doesn't apply the usage restrictions on downloads that services like iTunes and Zune do.
"We're looking forward to hearing the crafty songwriting of Barenaked Ladies celebrate our lucky 100 millionth downloader," Pakman said in a statement.
The Barenaked Ladies song about the winner will be available as an exclusive free track on eMusic for one week in January, before being bundled with their forthcoming album, Barenaked Ladies Are Men (Desperation Records/Nettwerk), which hits stores February 6.
