Pink Floyd guitarist is set to release EP dedicated to his late bandmate; CD features a cover of Barrett's "Dark Globe" and live versions of "Arnold Layne."

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is set to pay tribute to his fallen ex-bandmate Syd Barrett with an EP that will hit digital stores Christmas Day and retailers the day after.

Gilmour's Arnold Layne EP. Gilmour's Arnold Layne EP.

Gilmour, who toured for much of 2006 in support of his solo album, On an Island, is releasing three live recordings of material written by Barrett, the Pink Floyd cofounder who died in July after battling diabetes and various forms of mental illness for years.

The EP, dubbed Arnold Layne, will feature two versions of that song, which was Pink Floyd's first single. Gilmour recorded both versions at the Royal Albert Hall in London. One features Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright on vocals, while the other has surprise guest performer David Bowie.

The third song on the EP is an acoustic cover of the song "Dark Globe," from Barrett's debut solo album The Madcap Laughs.

In a note on his Web site, Gilmour says the tracks will be available to download on Christmas Day, while a limited run of 7-inch vinyl singles will be released on December 26. The site also noted that both versions of "Arnold Layne" will be included on Gilmour's forthcoming Live at the Royal Albert Hall DVD.

David Gilmour is best known for his distinctively spacy, atmospheric guitar work for Pink Floyd. Born March 6, 1944, in Cambridge, England, Gilmour was well acquainted with the members of Pink Floyd when they asked him to join their band to supplement the guitar work of the increasingly erratic Syd Barrett. When Barrett's mental breakdown made...

Pink Floyd Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality, in...

Syd Barrett Syd Barrett

Like a supernova, Roger "Syd" Barrett burned briefly and brightly, leaving an indelible mark upon psychedelic and progressive rock as the founder and original singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. Barrett was responsible for most of their brilliant first album, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but left and/or was fired from...

David Bowie David Bowie

The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall...

To think that David Gilmour waited 22 years to record his third solo album is a pretty solid indicator that he's not the kind of bloke to merely cash in on his name. After all, he's the guy who sold his house for four million English pounds and gave the money to charity. Perhaps now that the Pink Floyd reunion happened and he and Roger Waters...

The second post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd album is less forced and more of a group effort than A Momentary Lapse of Reason -- keyboard player Rick Wright is back to full bandmember status and has co-writing credits on five of the 11 songs, even getting lead vocals on "Wearing the Inside Out." Some of David Gilmour's lyrics (co-written by Polly...

Wisely, The Madcap Laughs doesn't even try to sound like a consistent record. Half the album was recorded by Barrett's former bandmates Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour, and the other half by Harvest Records head Malcolm Jones. Surprisingly, Jones' tracks are song for song much stronger than the more-lauded Floyd entries. The opening "Terrapin"...
