Police don't give rapper the Blue Carpet Treatment, pulling over his car after he appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno; it's his third arrest in two months.
Snoop Dogg allegedly likes to pack heat, and it's gotten him in a heap of trouble.
The rapper was arrested last night for the third time in two months on suspicion of gun and drug-possession charges, according to the Associated Press.
The 35-year-old Snoop Dogg--real name Calvin Broadus--was arrested for investigation of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possessing cocaine, transporting marijuana, and having a false compartment in his vehicle, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Kevin Grandalski told the AP.
Police pulled over the car Snoop was traveling as he left the taping of his performance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno to promote his new album, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. Police said they then searched the car as well as his home, allegedly found a handgun and some illegal drugs, and arrested him and two members of his entourage.
Snoop Dogg posted $60,000 bail and was released shortly after 1 a.m. this morning, his attorney, Donald Etra, told the wire service.
The arrests stem directly from two prior arrests related to incidents at airports in the past two months, and police had obtained a warrant to search the rapper's home prior to pulling over his car.
In the first, Snoop was arrested September 27 at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, after security officers said they found a collapsible metal baton in his carry-on bag. The rapper told deputies at the time of his arrest that the baton was a prop for a video, but an arrest warrant was issued for Snoop earlier this month and he was charged with felony possession of a deadly weapon.
Authorities said at the time that the violation would normally be a misdemeanor but was bumped up because of the rapper's prior criminal record. Snoop Dogg has a December 4 arraignment in that case.
Snoop Dogg was arrested a second time on October 26 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, after airport police said they found a gun and marijuana in his car. No charges have been filed in that case but the rapper has a December 12 arraignment.
He is expected to be arraigned for the latest arrest on January 11.
"As of this point, he stands innocent of all charges," Etra said. "The goal tonight was to get him out of jail. The goal tomorrow is to deal with the case."
Two acknowledged gang members who are associates of Broadus also were taken into custody, Grandalski said. Michael Mingo, 33, of Lakewood, was arrested for investigation of possessing burglary tools and Lovell Polk, 36, of Moreno Valley, was arrested for an outstanding warrant, Grandalski said. He did not know the nature of the warrant.
As with the arrest for the baton, much of the rapper's legal troubles stem from his prior convictions. He was convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and was charged with gun possession after a 1993 traffic stop. Facing a possible three years in prison, he pleaded guilty in exchange for three years' probation and his promise to make antiviolence public service announcements.
He was acquitted of murder in 1996 following the death of an alleged street gang member killed by gunfire from the vehicle in which he was traveling.
