UK songstress says producer "gets" her and has helped craft her first record that does not make her cringe.
At 19, British soul singer Joss Stone has already released two hugely successful solo albums.
But Stone told Rolling Stone this week that those two albums--2003's Soul Sessions and 2004's Mind, Body & Soul--"irritate" her. She's turned to R&B producer and former Tony! Toni! Toné! front man Raphael Saadiq to help her make an album she "can listen to and not cringe."
With her as-yet-untitled album that is set to hit stores March 6, Stone says she has done just that.
"I made two records that are so-so--some of those songs even irritate me," says Stone. "But in those days, it was like, 'Just sing, honey,'" she told the mag. "This album is me finally letting it out."
Stone recorded the album at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, calling Saadiq "the first person to get me." She's currently mixing the album at New York's Electric Lady Studios.
The album is said to feature a song called "Music," which features a rap verse from Lauryn Hill, as well as songs called "Headturner," "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now," "Tell Me 'Bout It," "Nothing Better Than (The iPod Song)," and "I Wish I Never Met You."
"I was ready to go home, go to school and become a midwife," Stone told the mag. "But now I finally have a record I can listen to and not cringe. And this is not some 'Promiscuous Girl' s***. This is real."
The new album will be the follow-up to Mind, Body & Soul, which debuted at No. 11 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.2 million copies in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
