Adams streams 11 new albums on his Web site under the names DJ Reggie, the Sh**, and WereWolph, while Pollard says he has seven albums on the way.
Long regarded as two of the most prolific songwriters in indie rock, Robert Pollard and Ryan Adams took their copious compositions to a whole new level this week.
Pollard told Billboard.com that he has seven albums on the docket, including a solo album, a Circus Devils album, a Takeovers album, and several compilations of new and archival material, including a second collection of his alcohol-induced stage banter.
Not to be outdone, Adams posted 11 new albums' worth of material on his Web site this week, revealing three new monikers to reflect his moves into hip-hop, lo-fi hardcore, and speed-punk. Adams has made each album available as a free stream on his site, complete with cover art. The albums are made up almost entirely of original material, although head-scratching covers include Creed's "Higher" and Shania Twain's "You're Still the One."
The rap albums, recorded under the name DJ Reggie, include Holla Dayz Inn, A Reginald Gangster, HipHop Breaker, and 4:20/20. As the Sh**, Adams posted Christmas Apocalypse, This Is Shit, ...Hits the Fans, Hillbilly Joel, General Ulysses S. Hospital, and Self Portrait. Adams also posted Feel the Laser under the name WereWolph.
Pollard told Billboard.com that his plethora of production stems largely from his recent calf-muscle injury and subsequent decision to stop touring, at least for now.
"It's too hard to psychologically reenergize yourself each night," he told the Web site. "With Guided by Voices, it didn't matter what day it was. What I'm doing now, in my opinion, is not only the same thing, I think it's a step up, even. But you get tired of beating your head against the wall."
Pollard said he has finished work on his latest album for Merge Records, Silverfish Trivia, and plans to release it in the fall of 2007. The album includes song titles like "Come Outside," "Speak in Many Colors," and "Coast to Coast Carpet of Love."
Pollard has also teamed with Todd Tobias under the name Circus Devils for a double-CD album called Sgt. Disco. The Takeovers, Pollard's collaboration with former Guided By Voices bassist Chris Slusarenko, plans to release a new album, Bad Football, in the spring.
Billboard reports that Pollard also plans to release a 50-track compilation from his Fading Captain series. The collection is called Crickets. The comp marks the closure of Pollard's Fading Captain label, which he plans to replace with a new label called Record Company Records.
Record Company Records has two vinyl-only releases on its schedule: Meet the King: A****le 2, the second collection of Pollard's alcohol-induced stage banter, and the The Great Houdini Wasn't So Great.
Pollard told Billboard that the Record Company albums' cover-art subject matter includes "a photo of me lying in a bathtub drinking a beer with a track suit on" and "my dad in the middle with a drink and a cigarette in his hand, my ex-brother-in-law Kevin Fennell, and me on the left of my dad with a pinstripe sport coat and a string tie."
"I don't blame labels who tell me, you've gotta quit doing so much s***," he said. "But this is not even my main stuff, you know? That's side stuff. That's the way I operate and that's the way I will continue to operate. They couldn't stop me. And here I am 49 years old, unsuccessful."
