Princes Williams and Harry rally Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Joss Stone, Bryan Ferry, and Pharrell Williams for July 1 event, with more on the way.
Princes William and Harry are calling on some of the big names in music to help them honor their mother.
The princes have organized a star-studded concert to mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of Diana, Princess of Wales, and have nabbed Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Joss Stone, Bryan Ferry, and Pharrell Williams to help them do so. The concert, dubbed Concert for Diana, will take place at Wembley Stadium on July 1, the day that Diana would have turned 46.
The concert is also set to include a performance from the English National Ballet, while acclaimed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber will stage a medley of songs from his West End shows.
More artists are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. A memorial service will also be held in London.
"We both wanted to put our stamp on it," Prince William said in making the announcement. "We want it to represent exactly what our mother would have wanted. So therefore the church service alone isn't enough. We wanted to have this big concert full of energy, full of the sort of fun and happiness, which I know she would have wanted. And on her birthday as well, it's got to be the best birthday present she ever had."
Tickets for the event went on sale today for £45 ($88.50) apiece through the concert's Web site. The first batch of about 22,500 tickets sold out in 20 minutes. More tickets are likely to be made available at a later date.
The capacity of the stadium, which is currently under construction, is expected to be 60,000.
"I applaud Princes William and Harry for choosing to honor their mother with this concert," Elton John said in a statement. "I am absolutely thrilled to be performing at this great event. Diana was a personal friend and someone I greatly admired for her tireless and enthusiastic work for charity."
Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon said that Diana regarded his band as her favorite.
"We are honored that she always referred to Duran Duran as her favorite band as she was certainly our favorite princess," Le Bon said in a statement.
Proceeds from the program will benefit various charities that were supported by Diana, and the Princes' charities Centrepoint and Sentebale.
