After bogus bid last week, Montreal man decides to put unreleased version of band's debut album up for auction a second time.
Velvet Underground rarity auction, take two.
In two days, Warren Hill hopes to conclude the minisaga of his sale of possibly the only copy of an unreleased version of the Velvet Underground's debut album, Velvet Underground & Nico.
The Montreal-based record collector bought the rarity four years ago at a stoop sale in New York City for 75 cents, and was thought to have made a windfall last week when it was auctioned off through eBay for more than $155,000.
But the bid proved to be bogus, apparently done by a prankster on a friend's computer. Now Hill and Saturn Records, the Oakland, California-based vintage record house managing the sale for Hill, are trying it again.
The new eBay auction of the acetate is set to conclude at about 11 a.m. ET Thursday.
To ensure a bogus-free ending this time around, Saturn is requiring "that interested bidders register before bidding so that we may examine their references," according to the revised auction page. Identities of bidders will be kept private "to avoid attracting non-serious attention-seeking bidders."
