Britney video is 2006's top celeb viral video
In 2006, online video fans just couldn't get enough of a burping, babbling Britney Spears espousing the benefits of time travel. A clip of the pop singer incoherently talking to a camera being operated by estranged husband Kevin Federline topped the list of most-watched celebrity viral videos, according to ViralVideoChart.com. The site said today that the video was viewed more than 3 million times, while footage of Federline apparently getting a text message informing him the pop singer had filed for divorce was second with nearly 2 million hits. ViralVideoChart.com says it scans several million blogs a day to see which clips are being talked about most and compiles a daily list of the 20 most-viewed videos. Seinfeld costar Michael Richards' racist outburst was third in the 2006 chart with more than a million hits just four weeks after it was first posted online. Richards sparked a public outcry for spewing a torrent of racial slurs at hecklers during his stand-up act at the Laugh Factor comedy club in Hollywood last month. Actress Lindsay Lohan talking less than generously about socialite Paris Hilton was fourth, while a video of Hilton crashing a Bentley claimed fifth place.
Grammys holds contest for Timberlake duet
Think you have the chops to hang with Justin Timberlake onstage at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards? Music's showcase event has teamed up with Yahoo and CBS for an American Idol-style contest, with the winner getting a chance to duet with Timberlake at the Grammys in Los Angeles February 11. The contest kicked off today, with contestants submitting 60-second videos of themselves singing one of nine Grammy-winning songs a cappella. The songs include Timberlake's "Cry Me a River," Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You," Aretha Franklin's "Respect," and six others. The videos will appear on Yahoo Music and CBS.com, where voters will have the chance to select their favorites. The three finalists will be announced during Super Bowl weekend February 4. The winner will not be revealed until the Grammys are broadcast, where they will share the stage with Timberlake that evening.
Garland recordings fail to sell
Early recording by Judy Garland that were expected to fetch $40,000 failed to reach the minimum bid in an auction Sunday. Recordings of four songs by a 12-year-old girl, who was born Frances Gumm, have not been heard in public and are believed to be the first made by Garland, who shot to fame after starring in The Wizard of Oz at age 16 in 1939. Garland died of a prescription drug overdose in 1969 at the age of 47. The auction's high bid was $22,500, according to auction house Bonhams & Butterfields in Hollywood. It was the second time the records failed to spark enough interest for the seller, who remains anonymous.
Aaron Carter love struck
Pop singer Aaron Carter, who broke off his engagement to former Playboy Playmate Kari Ann Peniche just a week after he proposed onstage in Las Vegas, has found love again. The 19-year-old singer told the Associated Press Monday that he is dating 18-year-old singer Kaci Brown. Despite the fact that he has only known Brown for a week, he said he's in love. "Now I'm in a great relationship," Carter told People magazine. "I've only known her for, like, seven days, but I have a connection with her that's like nothing else I've ever experienced. It's really amazing." Asked what Brown, a friend of Carter's twin sister Angel, gave him for his birthday, Carter said: "She got me love."
Barry Gibb cutting country record
Disco hitmaker Barry Gibb is making a country record and is getting in touch with the legacy of two of country's icons to help him do so. The Bee Gees principal told the Associated Press that he has bought and is restoring the lakefront house belonging to the late Johnny and June Carter Cash. "It's going to be nice," Gibb said. "We'd like to use it as our second home. I would like to come here and write songs. I am planning on making a country album. That is really who I am." Gibb said he and his two sons have about three completed songs and several others in the works. "I am a country artist, always have been a country artist, and this is my chance to get some self-expression out because the group is no longer the group," he said. The Bee Gees disbanded after the 2003 death of his brother, Maurice.
