Digital subscription service doles out awards for "most played" artists and songs in a variety of genres.

Looking to shine light on the role of subscription services in determining the year's most popular music, Napster handed out its first-ever awards today, honoring the most played songs and artists on its service.

Fall Out Boy Fall Out Boy

The subscription service said that Jack Johnson was Napster's most played artist in 2006, while Fall Out Boy's "Dance, Dance" was the most played song of the year.

Napster subscribers pay a monthly fee for unlimited playback access to the service's catalog of more than 3 million songs, with restrictions attached to what the user can do with the music. Access to all of Napster's music expires if the subscription lapses.

The service also said that Carrie Underwood was the most played new artist, while the Cowboy Junkies' cover of U2's "One" was the most played cover song of the year.

Napster is also honoring the artist that had the most substantial increase in plays year over year with its "Breakout Artist" award, earned this year by digital phenoms Arctic Monkeys.

"The Napster Awards provide insight into how music fans behave when they can listen to an enormous variety of music away from restrictive radio playlists, limited retail shelf space, 30-second clips, and buck-a-track digital stores," Napster CEO Chris Gorog said in a statement. "When consumers are given unlimited access to music and are freed from having to pay for each individual song in order to hear it, it's interesting to see how this freedom changes what they want to actually listen to."

Given the tightly controlled nature of American Idol, it's a wonder that the televised talent contest has never produced a winner who specialized in country music, since there's no segment of modern popular music that is controlled tighter than contemporary country. Maybe this thought was in the minds of Simon Fuller and the rest of AmIdol's 19...
