Twelve vie for Timberlake Grammy duet
Three teens, eight 20-somethings, and one 30-year-old named Africa have been picked as the finalists for a chance to sing a duet with Justin Timberlake at the 2007 Grammy Awards. The Recording Academy is holding an American Idol-like contest, with the winner landing a slot alongside Timberlake on the Staples Center stage for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards February 11. The would-be stars submitted online videos of themselves, and fans can view the videos and vote on their favorites at Yahoo Music. Fans will whittle the list down to five by January 17 and three just prior to the Super Bowl, where the three finalists will be announced. Each of the three finalists will rehearse with Timberlake during Grammy week and the public will choose the winner via online and text message votes. The finalists are Candace Devine, Amanda Dunn, Jillian Gaudious, Candice Jackson, Jessica James, Africa Miranda, David Moore, Brenda Radney, Phillip Ray, Jayne Rio, Robyn Troup, and Mandy Ventrice. The Grammys will be broadcast live on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
Fall Out Boy's Wentz gets into dustup
Pete Wentz doesn't seem the bare-knuckles type, but the pretty-boy Fall Out Boy bassist got into it with a security guard at his band's concert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday. Captured on video by a fan, Wentz apparently saw the guard getting into it with one of the band's roadies, who was trying to help fans jump up on stage toward the end of the show. Wentz jumped into the crowd and a melee ensued, with Wentz eventually jumping back on stage and yelling into his mic, "That's what you get when you f*** with my friends...f****** a******." Fall Out Boy is in the midst of its Friends or Enemies tour to promote its forthcoming album Infinity On High, which hits stores February 6. New Found Glory, the Early November, and Permanent Me are openers.
Rihanna wins awards in her native Barbados
Caribbean R&B diva Rihanna has won the top entertainer award for the second consecutive year at the Barbados Music Awards. The 18-year-old R&B singer, who landed hits in 2006 with songs like "Unfaithful," also garnered her country's best album of the year for A Girl Like Me. "I am always delighted to win awards, but it's especially great to win awards at home," she said. "I'm actually working on my third album, so you will be seeing and hearing a lot from me in the upcoming months." She closed the event by performing "Unfaithful" for a capacity crowd Friday night that included her mother, Monica Fenty, and Prime Minister Owen Arthur.
Kylie named best-dressed celeb by Glamour
Following her yearlong battle with cancer, Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue has been named best-dressed female celebrity by fashion magazine Glamour. Minogue took the No. 1 spot ahead of supermodel Kate Moss, who topped the list in 2006. The 38-year-old singer, on the comeback trail since undergoing breast cancer surgery in May 2005, was praised for her understated look, in contrast to the flamboyant costumes she has sported during her "Showgirl Homecoming Tour." Minogue jumped from No. 26 on the list in 2006, while Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham, took second. Nicole Richie took third, while Moss slipped to fourth this year. Moss' boyfriend Pete Doherty, the frontman of the band Babyshambles, was named one of the worst-dressed males.
Weiland write letter to Notre Dame football coach
Who knew? Scott Weiland, former singer for Stone Temple Pilots and current frontman for Velvet Revolver, is apparently a big college football fan. The singer released an open letter to University of Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis, who is rumored to be up for head coaching jobs in the NFL next year. "Okay Charlie, at this point I am going to assume that you haven't spoken to the [New York] Giants' organization about their 'potential coaching job.' But LEAVING NOTRE DAME, your alma mater, without having achieved really anything of monolithic proportions like you've promised us, is absurd and unfair. So at this point, I will get on my knees and beg. Don't do it, coach. Don't do it! Stay and do what you promised; your team, your school, the fans, the legacy deserves to be taken to the promised land." Weiland goes on to say that all Notre Dame fans are counting on Weis to stay. "The team's gotta go out there and get one," he wrote. "We, the Irish nation, fight for it with you together and we will all win one together and walk away to the promised land together."
