Legal turmoil surrounding his estate, including where exactly he will be laid to rest, delays the Godfather of Soul's burial.
Papa didn't take no mess, but his family sure seems to be making a mess over what to do with his estate.
More than two weeks after James Brown's death, his family is squabbling over the Godfather of Soul's estate, and because the location of his burial is one of the points of dispute, Brown's body continues to lie in a sealed casket in his home on Beech Island, the funeral home manager that handles his services told the Associated Press.
Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Brown's hometown of Augusta, Georgia, told the AP that his firm delivered Brown's body to his home on December 30. Since then, it has been stored in a room that is being kept at a controlled temperature, and security guards keep watch.
Brown's home has been locked since hours after his death to protect his memorabilia, furnishing, clothes, and other personal items, the soul icon's attorney Buddy Dallas said.
"Just imagine what would have happened," Dallas said. "Items of James Brown would have left there like items off the shelves of Macy's in an after-Christmas sale."
The trustees of Brown's estate are believed to be looking to turn Brown's home into a museum and tourist attraction honoring the entertainer, with Brown's body buried somewhere on the grounds of the property.
Attorney Debra Opri, who represents the Brown family, told E! Online that a committee has been formed to turn the estate into a museum. She noted that it took 90 days before Elvis Presley was laid to rest at his famed Memphis mansion.
What remains unresolved is the role of Tomi Rae Hynie, Brown's former backup singer and partner, who said shortly after his death that she encountered locked gates as she tried to get into the home she says she shared with the singer and their 5-year-old son.
Brown and Hynie got married several years ago, but Hynie was married to another man at the time she and Brown got hitched, and after Hynie got an annulment from her previous husband, she and Brown never made their union official.
Hynie has continued to reject those claims, but has yet to indicate whether or not she plans to take legal action.
