Indie record label, home to White Stripes, Moby, Raconteurs, and the Crystal Method, lays off staff and ends ties with artists; will focus on digital sales of its catalog.

Meg, Jack, and Moby are free, and 35 staffers at indie label V2 North America are without a job.

V2 North America said today that it laid off its staff Friday and will primarily become a catalog label, with an emphasis on digital sales.

The label's contract with Meg and Jack White's White Stripes previously expired, sending the duo off to negotiate with other labels for distribution for their own imprint, Third Man Records, for future releases.

But dozens of other artists, including Moby, the Crystal Method, Blood Brothers, Gang of Four, Ray Davies, Paul Weller, Grandaddy, Isobel Campbell, and Mercury Rev, are up for grabs.

The moves come from V2 parent company Sheridan Square's decision to restructure its entire operation. It will keep its catalog of music and focus on selling those releases in digital format only. It will continue to release new music from the gospel genre only.

V2 was founded by British entrepreneur and Virgin Records founder Richard Branson in 1996. New York-based Sheridan Square bought the North American assets in February 2006. The company went on a spending spree in 2006, acquiring indie labels Compendia and Artemis; distributor Musicrama; and certain catalog assets of Tone-Cool Records, Triloka, Ropeadope Records, and Vanguard Classical.

It is unclear how the moves will impact artists on labels like Ropeadope and Compendia. Sheridan Square could not be reached for comment.

Excluding Moby's tone-deaf musical atrocities, V2 had one of the most solid rosters around. This is sad news.

The White Stripes The White Stripes

Detroit minimalist rock duo (specifically, southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo) the White Stripes -- Jack White, guitar and vocals, Meg White, drums -- formed in 1997 (Bastille Day, to be precise) with the idea of making simple rock & roll music. From the red-and-white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled album, and stage...

Moby Moby

Moby was one of the most controversial figures in techno music, alternately praised for bringing a face to the notoriously anonymous electronic genre, as well as being scorned by hordes of techno artists and fans for diluting and trivializing the form. In either case, Moby was one of the most important dance music figures of the early '90s,...

The Raconteurs The Raconteurs

A self-described "new band made up of old friends," the Raconteurs feature the White Stripes' Jack White and power pop maestro Brendan Benson on vocals, keyboards, and guitars, and the Greenhornes' drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence as the group's rhythm section. The idea for the band began when Benson and White collaborated on the...

The Crystal Method The Crystal Method

L.A.'s Crystal Method have been referred to as America's answer to the Chemical Brothers. A dance-based electronic duo with a definite rock band feel, the comparison would seem appropriate, although it tends to erase what makes the group distinct: a solid base in American hip-hop, rock, soul, and pop. Formed in 1993 by Ken Jordan and Scott...

According to Jack White, Get Behind Me Satan deals with "characters and the ideal of truth," but in truth, the album is just as much about what people expect from the White Stripes and what they themselves want to deliver. The Raconteurs
It's hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there's only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes' eccentric mastermind Jack White.
