Killers to cover Joy Division

The Killers The Killers

The Killers are paying homage to one of their greatest influences. The Las Vegas-based rockers have recorded a cover of the 1979 Joy Division track "Shadowplay" for the soundtrack to Control, a biopic detailing Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis' tumultuous life. The film is based on the book Touching From a Distance, written by Curtis' widow Deborah Curtis. It is being directed by renowned photographer and video director Anton Corbijn, who took the photos that accompanied the release of the Killers' latest album, Sam's Town. Control is scheduled for a September 2007 release. Its soundtrack will also reportedly feature fresh material from New Order and rerecordings of numerous original Joy Division tunes.

James Blunt moving to Swiss ski resort

James Blunt James Blunt

British singer James Blunt plans to move to an exclusive Swiss ski resort, local officials told the Associated Press this week. Patrick Messeiller, director of tourism for Verbier, confirmed a report in the Swiss daily Le Matin that Blunt, who is a frequent visitor to the mountain village, had registered with the tax office there. Blunt, 32, is the latest celebrity to move to the alpine nation. French rock legend Johnny Hallyday took up residence in nearby Gstaad last month. Hallyday's move prompted a heated debate in France about rich people and multinational companies fleeing the country for Switzerland because of low taxation there. But Messeiller wouldn't comment on whether Blunt would receive similar preferential tax treatment as Hallyday. "That's a private matter," he said. London's Daily Mirror reported last year that Blunt, a former tank commander in the British army, earned $9.8 million with his 2005 album Back to Bedlam.

Usher fined for speeding violation

Usher Usher

Getting caught driving more than 100 miles per hour is going to cost Usher $425 and 20 hours of community service. The singer was clocked going 103 miles per hour on Interstate 75 in Georgia on July 4. He appeared in court today in Georgia's Bartow County Court and was found guilty. Probate Court Judge Mitchell Scoggins issued the ruling in the case. After the hearing, the singer spent 30 minutes signing autographs for fans.

Johnny Cash gospel album on the way

Johnny Cash Johnny Cash

Legacy Records is set to release an extensive collection of Johnny Cash's gospel recordings in the spring. Cash: Ultimate Gospel will be released in the US on March 6. Legacy called the album "the most in-depth collection of Cash's gospel recordings ever assembled." The country crooner frequently performed gospel songs at his shows, including the famous concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin, and he allegedly left his original label, Sun Records, when they wouldn't allow him to perform gospel material. Tracks on the new collection include songs like "He Turned the Water Into Wine," "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)," "The Preacher Said 'Jesus Said,'" and "Daddy Sang Bass."

As the embodiment of '90s gangsta rap, Snoop Dogg blurred the lines between reality and fiction. Introduced to the world through Dr. Dre's The Chronic, Snoop quickly became the most famous star in rap, partially because of his drawled, laconic rhyming and partially because the violence that his lyrics implied seemed real, especially after he was...

The Killers The Killers

Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), and Ronnie Vannucci (drums) took the fashionista pop world by storm in summer 2004 with "Somebody Told Me." The perfectly stylish song pulls from the band's influences -- the Smiths, New Order, Oasis, and the Cure -- and it was just enough to get them on MTV. Part...

James Blunt sought entry into the music industry upon finishing four years in the Army. After being spotted by a La Face record executive at a talent show in his hometown of Atlanta, it took no time for Usher Raymond's career to take off. The 14-year-old auditioned for La Face co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed the gospel choir boy to a recording contract. Raymond was introduced to the world simply as "Usher," and released his debut...

Johnny Cash Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt...

Baby Shambles Baby Shambles

Formed in spring 2004, just as the Libertines were beginning to fall apart, Baby Shambles became the main vessel for Pete Doherty's poetic, chaotic rock when he was ousted from the Libertines for his increasing drug use and erratic behavior. Baby Shambles released their self-titled debut 7" in April 2004, and settled on the lineup of Doherty,...

Soulful British crooner James Blunt's wistful debut infuses the listener -- in order -- with rainy-day hope, the wistful comfort of unattainable love, and finally, world-weary resignation. American V: A Hundred Highways is the long-awaited album of Johnny Cash's final recordings, the basic tracks for which (i.e., Cash's vocals) were recorded in 2002-2003, with overdubs added by producer Rick Rubin after his death on September 12, 2003, at age 71.
