Snoop Dogg holds giveaway contest
Looking to cruise the neighborhood in a tricked-out Snoop Dogg three-wheeled scooter? The rapper and his label Geffen Records are holding a giveaway of the scooter, as well as a Mitchell & Ness Oakland Raiders jersey, and copies of Snoop's latest album, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment.
Also among the giveaways are signed copies autographed of Snoop's 2006 book Love Don't Live Here No More, the rapper's first novel based on his life. Contestants are asked to fill out a survey about their interest in Blue Carpet and the music-related Web sites they use.
Killers to cover Joy Division
The Killers are paying homage to one of their greatest influences. The Las Vegas-based rockers have recorded a cover of the 1979 Joy Division track "Shadowplay" for the soundtrack to Control, a biopic detailing Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis' tumultuous life. The film is based on the book Touching From a Distance, written by Curtis' widow Deborah Curtis. It is being directed by renowned photographer and video director Anton Corbijn, who took the photos that accompanied the release of the Killers' latest album, Sam's Town. Control is scheduled for a September 2007 release. Its soundtrack will also reportedly feature fresh material from New Order and rerecordings of numerous original Joy Division tunes.
James Blunt moving to Swiss ski resort
British singer James Blunt plans to move to an exclusive Swiss ski resort, local officials told the Associated Press this week. Patrick Messeiller, director of tourism for Verbier, confirmed a report in the Swiss daily Le Matin that Blunt, who is a frequent visitor to the mountain village, had registered with the tax office there. Blunt, 32, is the latest celebrity to move to the alpine nation. French rock legend Johnny Hallyday took up residence in nearby Gstaad last month. Hallyday's move prompted a heated debate in France about rich people and multinational companies fleeing the country for Switzerland because of low taxation there. But Messeiller wouldn't comment on whether Blunt would receive similar preferential tax treatment as Hallyday. "That's a private matter," he said. London's Daily Mirror reported last year that Blunt, a former tank commander in the British army, earned $9.8 million with his 2005 album Back to Bedlam.
Usher fined for speeding violation
Getting caught driving more than 100 miles per hour is going to cost Usher $425 and 20 hours of community service. The singer was clocked going 103 miles per hour on Interstate 75 in Georgia on July 4. He appeared in court today in Georgia's Bartow County Court and was found guilty. Probate Court Judge Mitchell Scoggins issued the ruling in the case. After the hearing, the singer spent 30 minutes signing autographs for fans.
Johnny Cash gospel album on the way
Legacy Records is set to release an extensive collection of Johnny Cash's gospel recordings in the spring. Cash: Ultimate Gospel will be released in the US on March 6. Legacy called the album "the most in-depth collection of Cash's gospel recordings ever assembled." The country crooner frequently performed gospel songs at his shows, including the famous concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin, and he allegedly left his original label, Sun Records, when they wouldn't allow him to perform gospel material. Tracks on the new collection include songs like "He Turned the Water Into Wine," "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)," "The Preacher Said 'Jesus Said,'" and "Daddy Sang Bass."
