Protest rockers to reunite for desert music festival; Crowded House reunion also set; Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Roots, Willie Nelson, Interpol, Manu Chao, and Ghostface also on the bill.

The scent of feral protest music will be in the air at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

Rage Against the Machine Rage Against the Machine

The annual desert music bash, to be held April 27-29, said today that it has landed Rage Against the Machine, the hard funk rock band that broke up in 2000, as one of the headliners.

But as is often the case for a festival that boasts dozens of big-name artists over multiple stages and three days, Coachella announced several other major performers, with more on the way. Festival organizers said today that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are slated to perform, as is Bjork, who is at work on a forthcoming solo album.

Crowded House will also reunite for the event, which will also include Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Air, the Roots, Arctic Monkeys, Willie Nelson, Interpol, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Manu Chao, Ghostface Killah, Fountains of Wayne, Lily Allen, Jarvis Cocker, DJ Shadow, Perry Farrell's Satellite Party, Hot Chip, Peeping Tom, the Decemberists, the Happy Mondays, Tiesto, Kings of Leon, Travis, Stephen Marley, the Black Keys, Rufus Wainwright, the New Pornographers, Placebo, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Paul Van Dyk, Gotan Project, Kaiser Chiefs, Silversun Pickups, Faithless, LCD Soundsystem, and the Good, the Bad and the Queen, the new band from Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn.

The event will also feature performances from Konono No. 1, Nickel Creek, the Rapture, !!!, Richie Hawtin, Explosions in the Sky, Junior Boys, Sparklehorse, Soulwax, the Kooks, Felix Da Housecat, Blonde Redhead, Damien Rice, Lupe Fiasco, Jose Gonzales, Brazilian Girls, Regina Spektor, Ozomatli, Peaches, Cornelius, We Are Scientists, Amy Winehouse, the Comedians of Comedy, Spank Rock, Tapes 'n Tapes, the Klaxons, Girl Talk, CSS, the Coup, Andrew Bird, and Peter, Bjorn and John.

Rage Against the Machine, which co-headlined the first Coachella with Tool in 1999, will likely only reunite for the Coachella performance, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

Frontman Zack de la Rocha left the group in 1999, and the remaining trio later formed Audioslave with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell. Cornell is currently working on a solo album, as is guitarist Tom Morello. Little has been heard from De la Rocha since he left the group, although he had reportedly been working on a solo record for several years after the breakup.

Coachella tickets go on sale Saturday. A three-day pass will sell for $249; a limited amount of single-day tickets will be available for $85.

Rage Against the Machine Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disenfranchised fans (and not insignificant derision from critics) for their bombastic, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash. Rage formed in Los...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Red Hot Chili Peppers

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the...

Björk Björk

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture,...

Crowded House Crowded House

An institution in their homeland, a two-hit wonder in the U.S., and, during the last half of their ten-year career, bona fide stars in the U.K. and most of Europe, Crowded House recorded some of the best pop music of the late '80s and early '90s. Leader Neil Finn's carefully crafted songs, meticulous eye for lyrical detail, and gift for melody...

Arcade Fire Arcade Fire

Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and Win's kid brother William Butler formed the Arcade Fire in summer 2003. The experimental indie rock quintet, who hail from Montreal, initially began when the elder Butler spotted Chassagne singing jazz standards at a local art exhibit at Concordia University in their hometown. From...

Sonic Youth Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth was one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the '80s. Where contemporaries R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü were fairly conventional in terms of song structure and melody, Sonic Youth began their career by abandoning any pretense of traditional rock & roll conventions. Borrowing heavily from the free-form noise...

The Roots The Roots

Though popular success has largely eluded the Roots, the Philadelphia group showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Though their album works have been inconsistent affairs, more intent on building grooves than pushing...

Willie Nelson Willie Nelson

As a songwriter and a performer, Willie Nelson played a vital role in post-rock & roll country music. Although he didn't become a star until the mid-'70s, Nelson spent the '60s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price ("Night Life"), Patsy Cline ("Crazy"), Faron Young ("Hello Walls"), and Billy Walker ("Funny How Time Slips Away")...

Interpol Interpol

New York's Interpol reminds anyone who has ever heard post-punk bands like Joy Division and the Chameleons of those exact bands, plus a few more. The roots of the band -- as far as its members are considered -- can be traced back to a partnership between Daniel Kessler (a guitarist and vocalist) and a fellow New York University student named...

Red Hot Chili Peppers "Stadium Arcadium"
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Indulgence has long been a way of life for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, yet they resisted the siren's call of the double album until 2006's Stadium Arcadium. Sure, 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik was as long as a classic double LP, but such distinctions mattered little in the era when vinyl gave way to CD, and they matter less now, as...

Björk
Though Björk has written music for films before, her collaboration with Matthew Barney on Drawing Restraint 9 is a much deeper and more natural pairing, which makes sense, considering that they're partners in life (and now in art). Arcade Fire
The Arcade Fire are not an emo band. Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the group's emotional assault -- rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in the liner notes -- is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of that genre's angst-fueled...

Sonic Youth
Considering that Sonic Youth lost Jim O'Rourke and found the custom-tweaked, irreplaceable guitars that were stolen in 1999 before heading into the studio to make Rather Ripped, it seemed that the album could be a big departure from what they'd been doing on Murray Street and Sonic Nurse -- possibly a return to the kind of music they could only...

You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker finds Willie Nelson in comfortably familiar territory, which may come as a bit of a relief for those who found his 2005 reggae album Countryman an unwelcome detour.
